The Role
The Principal Cyber Architect will provide strategic leadership, ensuring the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of Royal Mail’s data and systems. Working closely with the CISO, CIO, and senior stakeholders, you will define and implement the long‑term cybersecurity architecture roadmap, aligning with business objectives and regulatory requirements.
You will lead a team of Cyber Architects, oversee the development of security standards and blueprints, and drive innovation in security technologies. This role has significant strategic impact, influencing initiatives such as cloud migration and digital transformation across more than 500 applications and 125,000 users.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership : Define and deliver the cybersecurity architecture strategy and roadmap in collaboration with the CISO and CIO.
Team Management : Lead, mentor, and inspire Cyber Architects, fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous learning.
Security Architecture Oversight : Develop and implement blueprints, standards, and threat modelling across infrastructure, software, and platforms.
Stakeholder Engagement : Influence senior stakeholders, simplifying complex issues and aligning security with business risk appetite.
Effective Security Advice : Provide pragmatic, timely guidance to change programmes and BAU initiatives, embedding security as a business enabler.
Innovation : Drive adoption of emerging technologies and innovative security patterns aligned with business needs.
Commercial Awareness : Deliver security solutions that support revenue‑generating business lines and operational goals.
Continuous Improvement : Measure and enhance the maturity of Royal Mail’s security architecture and controls.
About You
We’re looking for a proven leader with deep expertise in cybersecurity architecture and a passion for enabling secure business transformation.
Key Skills & Experience
Expert knowledge of security architecture frameworks (e.g., SABSA, TOGAF) and best practices.
Proven experience designing and implementing architectures across cloud (AWS, Azure, GCP), networks, data, and endpoints.
Strong commercial acumen, from product selection and vendor management to contract negotiation.
Experience with SIEM, EDR, firewalls, and other core security technologies.
Track record in conducting audits, risk assessments, and incident response.
5+ years in cybersecurity architecture, with at least 2 years in a leadership role.
Recognised qualifications such as SABSA, TOGAF, CISSP‑ISSAP, CISM, CRISC, SANS, GIAC.
Exceptional communication skills, able to articulate cyber risks to diverse audiences.
Analytical thinker with resilience, able to balance competing priorities and drive consensus.
