Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Matron is responsible for providing senior clinical and operational leadership across the Integrated Medicine care group, ensuring the consistent delivery of high-quality, safe and effective patient care. Acting as a visible and accessible leader, the postholder will role model professional standards, drive quality improvement, and support ward teams to deliver excellent patient outcomes and experience.
The postholder will lead on the implementation and monitoring of clinical standards, ensuring compliance with Trust policies, national guidance, and regulatory requirements. This includes oversight of key quality indicators such as falls, pressure ulcers, infection prevention, documentation standards, and patient experience. The Matron will support a culture of continuous improvement, using data, audit, and feedback to drive service development and address areas of risk.
A key aspect of the role is supporting patient flow and operational performance across the care group. The postholder will work closely with ward teams, site management, and the multidisciplinary team to ensure timely assessment, decision-making, and discharge planning, proactively identifying and escalating barriers to flow.
The Matron will have responsibility for workforce leadership, including ensuring safe staffing levels, effective skill mix, and the ongoing development of nursing staff. This includes supporting recruitment and retention, managing performance, promoting staff wellbeing, and fostering a positive, inclusive working culture.
Working as part of the multi-professional leadership team, the postholder will build strong relationships with clinical and operational colleagues, as well as community and system partners, to support integrated working and improved patient pathways.
The role also includes responsibility for ensuring a safe, clean, and suitable care environment, maintaining high standards of infection prevention and control, and responding proactively to patient and staff feedback to enhance the quality of care delivery.

AI tools like chatbots and virtual assistants can support you as you complete your application. For example, they can check for spelling or grammar errors, or help you to decide what to include. They shouldn’t however replace your own responses or be used to write the application for you.
Relying too much on AI can negatively impact your chances of success because automatically generated answers:
- might not be specific or relevant enough to address the criteria in the recruitment profile
- often seem generic and not personalised enough – an AI response won’t show your unique voice and perspective
- could misrepresent information about you, such as your qualifications, skills and experience
We monitor applications for any behaviour that could create an unfair advantage, and we check all references carefully. You are likely to be tested on your experience at interview, so be honest and make sure all the information in your application is correct.
