Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teaching Assistant

We are seeking a compassionate, patient, and professional Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teaching Assistant to join our inclusive primary school in Enfield, North London. Role Overview
The SEN Teaching Assistant will work closely with class teachers, the SENCo, and other support staff to provide targeted assistance to pupils with a variety of additional needs, including learning difficulties, autism spectrum disorders, speech and language challenges, social, emotional, or behavioural needs, and physical disabilities.
You will support pupils both individually and in small groups, delivering tailored interventions, adapting learning activities, and facilitating access to the curriculum. You will also support the development of social, emotional, and behavioural skills, helping pupils build confidence, independence, and positive relationships with their peers.
This role requires patience, empathy, and the ability to respond to the unique needs of each child, as well as strong collaboration with staff, families, and external professionals.
Key Responsibilities
As a SEN Teaching Assistant, your responsibilities will include:
Supporting children with SEN in one-to-one and small group settings, implementing individual learning plans
Assisting with the preparation, adaptation, and delivery of resources to meet the specific needs of pupils
Supporting children’s communication, literacy, numeracy, and social-emotional development
Implementing strategies to promote positive behaviour and emotional wellbeing
Encouraging independence, self-confidence, and resilience in learning
Observing, recording, and reporting on children’s progress to the class teacher and SENCo
Supporting children with personal care or physical needs where appropriate
Collaborating with teachers, SENCo, parents, and external professionals to ensure consistent support
Facilitating access to classroom activities and learning experiences for children with additional needs
Contributing to the maintenance of a safe, stimulating, and inclusive learning environment
Participating in staff training and professional development opportunities
Maintaining accurate records of interventions, outcomes, and progress
The Ideal Candidate
We are looking for a dedicated, compassionate, and flexible practitioner who is passionate about supporting children with additional needs. You should possess excellent communication skills, a calm and patient approach, and a strong commitment to helping pupils reach their full potential.
The successful candidate will ideally demonstrate:
Experience supporting children with SEN in an educational or childcare setting
Knowledge of learning difficulties, autism spectrum disorders, and strategies for promoting learning, social development, and behaviour management
Ability to adapt learning activities to meet the needs of individual pupils
Strong teamwork and organisational skills
Empathy, patience, and resilience in challenging situations
Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children
A relevant qualification in SEN, education, or childcare (Level 2 or 3) is desirable but not essential for candidates with substantial experience and a willingness to engage in professional development.
