Primary School – Enfield, North London

We are seeking a compassionate, patient, and professional Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teaching Assistant to join our inclusive primary school in Enfield, North London. This role provides a unique opportunity to support children with a range of additional needs, helping them to access the curriculum, achieve their academic goals, and develop socially and emotionally.

Our school prides itself on creating a nurturing and inclusive environment, ensuring that every child, regardless of ability, is given the opportunity to thrive. The SEN provision at our school is well-established and designed to provide personalised support while fostering independence, resilience, and confidence. We value Teaching Assistants as essential members of our team, recognising the critical role they play in the success and wellbeing of our pupils.

Role Overview

The SEN Teaching Assistant will work closely with class teachers, the SENCo, and other support staff to provide targeted assistance to pupils with a variety of additional needs, including learning difficulties, autism spectrum disorders, speech and language challenges, social, emotional, or behavioural needs, and physical disabilities.

You will support pupils both individually and in small groups, delivering tailored interventions, adapting learning activities, and facilitating access to the curriculum. You will also support the development of social, emotional, and behavioural skills, helping pupils build confidence, independence, and positive relationships with their peers.

This role requires patience, empathy, and the ability to respond to the unique needs of each child, as well as strong collaboration with staff, families, and external professionals.

Key Responsibilities

As a SEN Teaching Assistant, your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting children with SEN in one-to-one and small group settings, implementing individual learning plans

  • Assisting with the preparation, adaptation, and delivery of resources to meet the specific needs of pupils

  • Supporting children’s communication, literacy, numeracy, and social-emotional development

  • Implementing strategies to promote positive behaviour and emotional wellbeing

  • Encouraging independence, self-confidence, and resilience in learning

  • Observing, recording, and reporting on children’s progress to the class teacher and SENCo

  • Supporting children with personal care or physical needs where appropriate

  • Collaborating with teachers, SENCo, parents, and external professionals to ensure consistent support

  • Facilitating access to classroom activities and learning experiences for children with additional needs

  • Contributing to the maintenance of a safe, stimulating, and inclusive learning environment

  • Participating in staff training and professional development opportunities

  • Maintaining accurate records of interventions, outcomes, and progress

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for a dedicated, compassionate, and flexible practitioner who is passionate about supporting children with additional needs. You should possess excellent communication skills, a calm and patient approach, and a strong commitment to helping pupils reach their full potential.

The successful candidate will ideally demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of learning difficulties, autism spectrum disorders, and strategies for promoting learning, social development, and behaviour management

  • Ability to adapt learning activities to meet the needs of individual pupils

  • Strong teamwork and organisational skills

  • Empathy, patience, and resilience in challenging situations

  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children

A relevant qualification in SEN, education, or childcare (Level 2 or 3) is desirable but not essential for candidates with substantial experience and a willingness to engage in professional development.

Our School and SEN Provision

Our school offers a supportive and collaborative environment where staff are encouraged to develop professionally and contribute to a culture of high-quality, inclusive education. The SEN provision is led by an experienced SENCo and provides targeted support tailored to the needs of individual pupils, enabling them to access the curriculum and achieve their learning goals.

We work closely with families to ensure continuity between home and school, maintaining clear communication regarding children’s progress and wellbeing. Staff benefit from strong leadership, access to resources, and ongoing professional development opportunities.

What We Offer

  • A welcoming, inclusive, and professional school environment

  • A supportive and experienced SEN team

  • Access to professional development, training, and mentoring

  • Opportunities to contribute to the development of inclusive practices

  • Recognition and appreciation for your contribution to children’s learning and personal development
