PATH current employees - please log in and apply Here

PATH is a global nonprofit dedicated to achieving health equity. With more than 40 years of experience forging multisector partnerships and with expertise in science, economics, technology, advocacy, and dozens of other specialties, PATH develops and scales up innovative solutions to the world's most pressing heath challenges.

PATH's AI Innovation portfolio is pioneering the use of generative AI and other advanced digital technologies to accelerate biomedical discovery, strengthen regulatory systems, and improve the safety and scalability of digital (mental) health care.

The AI Fellow will work across many initiatives, but with a particular focus on AI for (mental) health and on AI for biomedical science. You will provide scientific and technical expertise, support and lead research execution, and contribute to the translation of outputs into global public goods. This is a technical role, and you will need to be comfortable leading the technical components of our research, which aims to develop, evaluate, and deploy AI to improve health.

Responsibilities:

1) Research & Technical Leadership

  • Lead and contribute to research activities across multiple projects (supported by AI team leadership), including, for example:
    • Developing automated monitoring and evaluation methods to detect potential harms caused by AI-enabled mental health products in real time.
    • Deploying and evaluating an AI Co-Scientist to identify novel correlates of protection to accelerate vaccine development.
  • Apply quantitative research methods (e.g., experimental study design, benchmarking framework design, statistical analysis etc.) and technical AI methods (e.g., agent architecture design and development, prompt engineering, evaluation method development etc.) independently and in collaboration with our partners.
  • Conduct technical writing of study protocols, reports, and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Collaborate with academic, industry, and government partners to ensure methodological rigor and relevance.
2) Project Execution & Coordination

  • Support the design, execution, and monitoring of research work packages.
  • Manage research outputs including datasets, evaluation frameworks, software toolkits etc.
  • Coordinate with partners (e.g., Google, University of Washington, African Medicines Agency, Wellcome Trust, Gates Foundation) to deliver joint activities.
  • Ensure compliance with PATH and donor research ethics and data protection standards.
3) Stakeholder Engagement & Knowledge Translation

  • Liaise with regulators, policymakers, product developers, lived experience experts, and subject matter experts to co-design research activities, tools, and frameworks.
  • Support dissemination of findings through publications, open-access toolkits, workshops, and conferences.
  • Promote global access by ensuring research outputs are openly shared and designed for LMIC applicability.
  • Contribute to PATH's thought leadership in AI and global health.
Required Skills & Experience:

  • Relevant BSc or MSc with significant (3+ years) research experience, or PhD in a relevant field (e.g., AI for public health, (clinical) psychology, computational biology, computer science, machine learning, or a related field).
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas: natural language processing, AI benchmarking and evaluation, agentic AI architectures, human-AI collaboration, clinical AI, mental health science, clinical psychology, immunology
  • Strong coding skills, as necessary to carry out independent AI research, including experience piloting AI/ML models in Python
  • Excellent scientific writing skills, ideally as demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications.
  • Great communication and interpersonal skills, and a strong ability to collaborate within interdisciplinary and multicultural teams.
  • Commitment to PATH's values of health equity, innovation, and partnership.
  • Experience working on multi-partner, interdisciplinary research projects.
  • Experience applying AI innovations to improve global (mental) health.
  • Experience evaluating the quality and/or safety of AI products in (mental) health.
  • Experience engaging with diverse stakeholders (e.g., researchers, regulators, policymakers, product developers) to conduct research and disseminate outputs.
We know great candidates won't always meet every listed qualification. Research shows that some groups, on average, are more likely to self-select out if they feel they don't meet all requirements. If you're excited about the role and think you'd be a good fit, we encourage you to apply.

To be selected, you must have legal authorization to work in the UK.
