About us

Based in Guys Hospital, the Centre for Gene Therapy and Regenerative Medicine acts as a focus for cutting-edge stem cell research taking place across Kings and its partner NHS Trusts, as part of Kings Health Partners. Our research environment is enriched by expertise in embryonic, pluripotent, and adult tissue stem cells and includes researchers studying a range of diseases such as infertility, preeclampsia, diabetes, skin fibrosis and acute liver failure.

About the role

The post holder will support the research undertaken by the Trophoblast and Human Embryo Lab, situated in the Centre for Gene Therapy and Regenerative Medicine at the Guys Hospital campus. The research focuses on elucidating mechanisms underlying human placenta development. The Research Assistant will provide technical and administrative support for stem cell research within the laboratory. The role will involve maintaining laboratory operations, including routine mycoplasma testing, maintenance of mouse feeder cell stocks, ordering and managing laboratory reagents and consumables, and supporting data management. The postholder will contribute to the efficient delivery of research activities by ensuring high standards of laboratory organisation, quality control, and record keeping in support of ongoing research projects.

This is a full-time post (35 hours per week), offered on a fixed-term basis for 12 months from 2 October 2026. The role is based fully on-site.

Research staff at Kings are entitled to at least 10 days per year (pro-rata) for professional development. This entitlement, from the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers , applies to Postdocs, Research Assistants, Research and Teaching Technicians, Teaching Fellows and AEP equivalent up to and including grade 7. About you

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

1. A BSc (2:1 or above) in a relevant subject (e.g. biological/biomedical sciences, cell biology, genetics) or equivalent laboratory experience
2. Evidence of strong attention to detail and accurate record keeping including maintaining electronic and paper-based documentation of experimental methods and results
3. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, ability to contribute to the team success such as training colleagues, providing scientific input during meetings, keeping a healthy working atmosphere in the research group
4. Willingness and ability to work outside core hours, including evenings and weekends as required by stem cell culture schedule, & understanding that research priorities can change and may require changes to planned work
5. Systematic approach, underpinned with a commitment to high technical standards
6. Good organisational skills, with the ability to maintain a clean, safe, and well-stocked shared laboratory environment

Desirable criteria

1. Previous experience within reproduction, pregnancy and early development research
2. Aptitude for learning new laboratory techniques
3. Report writing and presentational skills
