Role Overview

We are recruiting a Relief HGV Driver (Class 2 Hiab) to join our New Malden team. This is a customer-facing role responsible for delivering materials to trade and retail customers, operating a Class 2 HIAB-equipped vehicle safely and efficiently, and supporting branch and transport teams during peak periods or cover requirements. The successful candidate will be reliable, safety conscious and adaptable, able to represent the company professionally while maintaining high standards of vehicle care and customer service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate a Class 2 (C) HGV fitted with a HIAB crane to load, transport and unload goods to customers’ sites, following job sheets and instructions from the Transport Supervisor.

  • Use the onboard HIAB crane safely and efficiently to lift and place materials at customer sites, following safe systems of work and manufacturer guidance.

  • Carry out daily vehicle and HIAB checks, report any defects through the correct channels and ensure vehicle documentation is complete and up to date.

  • Plan routes to meet delivery schedules and customer time windows, communicating with the transport office regarding delays, traffic or site restrictions.

  • Provide excellent customer service on site and at point of delivery; liaise professionally with customers to ensure safe unloading and placement of goods.

  • Assist with loading at branch where required, including manual handling tasks and use of lifting aids, to support efficient turnaround of vehicles.

  • Complete delivery paperwork and electronic proof of delivery accurately and promptly, reporting any shortages, damage or customer queries to the Transport Supervisor.

  • Adhere to company health and safety policies, use appropriate PPE, follow site-specific instructions and report incidents or near misses immediately.

  • Work flexibly to provide cover across the New Malden branch and neighbouring branches as required, supporting peak periods and ad-hoc transport requirements.

Person Specification

  • Valid UK Class 2 (Category C) driving licence with HIAB (crane) endorsement and CPC completed.

  • Proven experience as an HGV driver operating Class 2 vehicles with HIAB/crane experience is essential.

  • Good knowledge of vehicle and HIAB checks, safe use of lifting equipment and manual handling best practice.

  • Customer-focused with strong communication skills and a professional, courteous manner when dealing with customers and colleagues.

  • Reliable, punctual and able to work flexibly to meet business needs, including early starts and occasional Saturday cover.

  • Physically fit and able to carry out manual handling tasks and work outdoors in variable weather conditions.

  • Basic IT literacy to use handheld devices and electronic proof of delivery systems.

  • Commitment to follow company safety procedures and work as part of a team across yard, branch and transport functions.

Working Hours, Salary and Benefits

  • Full-time, permanent relief/cover role based at our New Malden branch.

  • Hours will vary to meet operational needs; early starts are common. Flexibility to provide cover across the working week is required. (44.5 hours - Monday - Friday 06.30 - 16.00, plus 1 in 2 Sat 08.00 - 12.00)

  • Competitive salary in line with experience and responsibility (£40,000 - £42,000)

  • 25 days’ holiday per year plus bank holidays and a celebration day, rising with service in line with company policy.

  • Company pension scheme.

  • Employee Assistance Programme and access to online GP services.

  • Comprehensive induction, HIAB refresher training where required and opportunities for ongoing development and progression.

Why Join New Malden?

  • Work for a well-established, family-owned company with a strong local reputation and commitment to service.

  • Be part of a supportive, team-focused environment where safety and customer service are prioritised.

  • Develop your skills through structured training and clear progression pathways within the business.

  • Play an important role in delivering outstanding service to trade and retail customers in New Malden and the surrounding area.

We are an equal opportunities employer and welcome applications from all suitably qualified candidates. If you are a dependable, safety-focused HGV driver with HIAB experience and take pride in delivering excellent service, we would like to hear from you. #HP
