School Caretaker | Secondary Academy | Hounslow
The Opportunity
Hounslow is a dynamic London borough that serves as a major gateway for international transport and commerce. We are seeking a diligent, proactive, and multi-skilled School Caretaker to join our premises team at a thriving secondary academy. In this role, you will be the backbone of the school’s infrastructure, ensuring that the learning environment is safe, secure, and maintained to the highest standards for our students and staff.
The Role & Department
You will be part of a dedicated site team responsible for the daily operation of a large secondary campus.
This role requires a hands-on approach to facility management, ranging from minor repairs to overseeing complex health and safety protocols.
You will work closely with the Premises Manager to ensure the school remains compliant with all statutory regulations while supporting the logistics of a busy academic calendar.
The academy provides a structured and professional environment where your technical skills and commitment to site safety are highly valued.
Core Responsibilities
Site Security: Managing the opening and closing of the school premises, including the setting of alarms and conducting regular perimeter checks to ensure a secure environment.
Maintenance & Repairs: Carrying out essential DIY tasks, including minor plumbing, carpentry, painting, and glazing, ensuring the fabric of the building is kept in excellent condition.
Health & Safety Compliance: Conducting routine inspections of fire safety equipment, lighting, and heating systems, while maintaining accurate logs for health and safety audits.
Logistics & Events: Setting up halls and classrooms for exams, assemblies, and community evening events, including the movement of furniture and equipment.
Contractor Liaison: Assisting with the supervision of external contractors during larger building projects or specialized maintenance visits.
The Successful Candidate We are looking for a practical, reliable individual who takes pride in the appearance and safety of the school. Requirements include:
Experience: Proven experience in a caretaking, facilities, or trade role (e.g., plumbing, carpentry, or general maintenance).
Technical Proficiency: A sound understanding of health and safety regulations (COSHH, Legionella, Fire Safety) and the ability to use a wide range of hand and power tools safely.
Physical Resilience: The ability to perform manual handling tasks and remain active throughout the day in a large-scale campus environment.
Communication: A professional and friendly manner, with the ability to work effectively with staff, students, and external visitors.
Why Join Us?
A vital role within a supportive academy where your work directly impacts the daily lives of hundreds of students.
Access to ongoing training in health and safety, first aid, and specialized facilities management.
The opportunity to work in Hounslow, a well-connected borough with excellent links to the M4, Heathrow, and Central London.
A stable and rewarding position with a clear set of responsibilities and a strong sense of community.
