Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teaching Assistant

We are seeking a dedicated, compassionate, and professional Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teaching Assistant to join our inclusive primary school in Haringey, North London. Role Overview
The SEN Teaching Assistant will work closely with class teachers, the SENCo, and other members of the support team to provide targeted support for pupils with additional needs. You will work in one-to-one settings, small groups, and sometimes whole-class contexts to ensure pupils can access learning and make progress.
You will be responsible for supporting academic development, social and emotional growth, and personal development. The role requires flexibility, patience, and a compassionate approach, as well as a strong ability to collaborate with colleagues, families, and external professionals.
Key Responsibilities
The SEN Teaching Assistant will undertake a broad range of responsibilities, including:
Supporting pupils with SEN in one-to-one and small group settings, implementing personalised learning activities
Assisting in the preparation and adaptation of resources to meet individual learning needs
Supporting pupils’ literacy, numeracy, communication, and social-emotional development
Encouraging positive behaviour and fostering emotional resilience
Promoting independence, self-confidence, and engagement in learning
Observing, recording, and reporting on pupils’ progress to the class teacher and SENCo
Supporting pupils with physical needs or personal care routines where required
Collaborating with teachers, SENCo, parents, and external professionals to ensure consistent and effective support
Facilitating pupils’ access to classroom activities alongside their peers
Contributing to the maintenance of a safe, inclusive, and stimulating learning environment
Maintaining accurate records of interventions, progress, and outcomes
Participating in staff training, professional development, and team meetings
The Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate will be compassionate, patient, and motivated to support children with diverse learning needs. You should be able to build strong relationships with pupils, colleagues, and families and demonstrate a proactive and flexible approach to support.
We are looking for someone who can demonstrate:
Experience supporting children with SEN in an educational or childcare setting
Knowledge of different learning difficulties, autism spectrum disorders, and strategies for social, emotional, and behavioural support
Ability to adapt learning activities to meet individual needs
Strong teamwork, communication, and organisational skills
Patience, resilience, and empathy in challenging situations
A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children
A relevant qualification in special educational needs, teaching, or childcare (Level 2 or 3) is desirable, although candidates with substantial experience and a commitment to professional development are encouraged to apply.
