Primary School – Haringey, North London

We are seeking a dedicated, compassionate, and professional Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teaching Assistant to join our inclusive primary school in Haringey, North London. This is a rewarding opportunity for an individual committed to supporting children with a range of additional needs, helping them access the curriculum, develop socially and emotionally, and achieve their full potential.

Our school is proud of its commitment to inclusion, equity, and the holistic development of every child. We believe that children with special educational needs deserve a tailored, high-quality educational experience, and our SEN provision is designed to support learning, independence, and wellbeing. Teaching Assistants play a central role in achieving these goals, providing practical, emotional, and academic support for pupils with diverse needs.

Role Overview

The SEN Teaching Assistant will work closely with class teachers, the SENCo, and other members of the support team to provide targeted support for pupils with additional needs. You will work in one-to-one settings, small groups, and sometimes whole-class contexts to ensure pupils can access learning and make progress.

You will be responsible for supporting academic development, social and emotional growth, and personal development. The role requires flexibility, patience, and a compassionate approach, as well as a strong ability to collaborate with colleagues, families, and external professionals.

Key Responsibilities

The SEN Teaching Assistant will undertake a broad range of responsibilities, including:

  • Supporting pupils with SEN in one-to-one and small group settings, implementing personalised learning activities

  • Assisting in the preparation and adaptation of resources to meet individual learning needs

  • Supporting pupils’ literacy, numeracy, communication, and social-emotional development

  • Encouraging positive behaviour and fostering emotional resilience

  • Promoting independence, self-confidence, and engagement in learning

  • Observing, recording, and reporting on pupils’ progress to the class teacher and SENCo

  • Supporting pupils with physical needs or personal care routines where required

  • Collaborating with teachers, SENCo, parents, and external professionals to ensure consistent and effective support

  • Facilitating pupils’ access to classroom activities alongside their peers

  • Contributing to the maintenance of a safe, inclusive, and stimulating learning environment

  • Maintaining accurate records of interventions, progress, and outcomes

  • Participating in staff training, professional development, and team meetings

The Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will be compassionate, patient, and motivated to support children with diverse learning needs. You should be able to build strong relationships with pupils, colleagues, and families and demonstrate a proactive and flexible approach to support.

We are looking for someone who can demonstrate:

  • Experience supporting children with SEN in an educational or childcare setting

  • Knowledge of different learning difficulties, autism spectrum disorders, and strategies for social, emotional, and behavioural support

  • Ability to adapt learning activities to meet individual needs

  • Strong teamwork, communication, and organisational skills

  • Patience, resilience, and empathy in challenging situations

  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children

A relevant qualification in special educational needs, teaching, or childcare (Level 2 or 3) is desirable, although candidates with substantial experience and a commitment to professional development are encouraged to apply.

Our School and SEN Provision

Our school offers a collaborative and supportive environment where staff are encouraged to develop professionally and contribute to high-quality, inclusive education. The SEN provision is led by an experienced SENCo and provides targeted interventions tailored to individual pupils’ needs, ensuring that all children can participate fully in the curriculum and achieve their potential.

We work closely with families to support continuity between home and school and maintain open communication about progress and wellbeing. Staff benefit from a culture of professional support, access to resources, and ongoing development opportunities.

What We Offer

  • A welcoming and inclusive school community

  • A supportive and experienced SEN team

  • Access to professional development, training, and mentoring

  • Opportunities to contribute to the development of inclusive teaching practices

  • Recognition and appreciation for your contributions to children’s learning and personal development

This is a term-time only position and may be offered on a full-time or part-time basis , depending on the needs of the school. It is ideal for candidates seeking a long-term role in primary education and who are committed to supporting children with additional needs.

Safeguarding

The school is fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. All appointments are subject to enhanced DBS checks, satisfactory references, and relevant pre-employment checks in line with statutory safeguarding guidance.
