About Us:

THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF SAFIA’S INCLUSIVE NATURE

Public Health at Westminster City Council is a place of Extraordinary Stories. Where empathy drives collaboration and builds vibrant, inclusive communities.

Safia is an excellent example of someone who has brought real passion to her role. From her Environmental Health work with Chinatown’s restaurateurs, to time out volunteering with refugees in Jordan, she understands people and has always wanted to help them. It’s what inspired her to join Public Health. She works with a fantastic team, tackling inequality across Westminster, supporting vulnerable people, and promoting mental health services. Safia’s natural people skills means she thrives when working with others. The work she does is focussed on bringing London’s diverse cultures together, building trust, improving mental health, and maintaining the highest of standards. And Westminster is vibrant with the positive impact she and the team has on its communities.

The Role:

As an Extreme Cleaning Specialist, you too can make a powerful contribution. You’ll be on the frontline, helping restore homes to safe, clean, and habitable conditions — directly improving the health and wellbeing of Westminster’s most vulnerable residents.

We’re a small, close-knit team, passionate about making a difference. Reporting directly to the Cleaning Supervisor, you’ll also work closely with a range of professionals, including housing officers, social workers, and environmental health teams. This may entail reporting safeguarding concerns or property damage to the appropriate authority. Together, you’ll work out the best way forward for residents.

You’ll provide professional and sensitive cleaning services in properties affected by hoarding, hazardous waste, or extreme cleaning needs. As situations can be challenging, you’ll need to be professional, resilient and have a strong commitment to health and safety (including COSHH and biohazard protocols). Ensuring safety will be at the core of what you do: whether you’re deep cleaning, disposing waste materials or decontaminating. Plus, you’ll maintain accurate records of work completed, materials used, and any incidents or hazards encountered.

There will be times when you’ll have to wear PPE for extended periods. Often, you’ll encounter vulnerable residents. We ask that you approach them with empathy, patience, respect and offer a discrete, non-judgement service.

This role will require some flexibility, as you’ll occasionally have to work evenings or weekends.

Our work culture is built on transparency and integrity. We strongly encourage your development and will nurture your talent through coaching and mentoring. We’re always open to hearing new perspectives.

You’ll be the person who brings dignity, safety, and hope to those facing the most difficult circumstances. Your work will have a direct, visible impact on people’s lives, and you’ll be supported by a Council that values your expertise and invests in your development. If you want a role where your compassion, professionalism, and practical skills truly matter, this is the opportunity for you.

Please refer to the Job Description for more information.

About You:

You’ve got a strong understanding of cleaning techniques, including deep cleaning, disinfection, and safe waste disposal. This is complemented by an excellent awareness of health and safety practices, including COSHH and PPE usage, with a comfortability using specialist cleaning equipment and chemicals safely and effectively.

As you’ll be working in emotionally charged situations, you’ll need superb communication and interpersonal skills. You’re able to interact sensitively with vulnerable individuals. Sometimes, it’ll be necessary to deescalate conflict and find a resolution. Plus, you have strong observational skills and the ability to identify hazards, safeguarding concerns or property issues.

Teamworking skills in multi-agency environments will be key, as you’ll work with housing officers, social workers or environmental health teams. At the same time, you’re confident working independently and can effectively manage time under pressure.

You have basic IT skills, so that you can write up digital records or reports.

It’s essential that you have a valid Driving Licence. It would be nice to see one or more of the following: a certification in biohazard or trauma cleaning; health and safety training, including COSHH awareness; manual handling certification; safeguarding training (Level 1 or above). However, please note that we are more interested in your skills and experiences.
