About Us:

The Environment & Communities Directorate in Westminster City Council is a world of extraordinary stories. Where dedicated people like Grace are using their skills and passion to progress environmental action in the heart of London.

It was at university where Grace first started campaigning for improved recycling facilities, water refill stations, and other eco-friendly initiatives. When she saw the real difference people could make when they came together, she knew she wanted to dedicate her career to community action for the planet.

When she joined us as Principal Engagement Officer, Climate Emergency, she quickly established herself as a passionate advocate for community outreach, engaging various stakeholders across Westminster in the social causes, impacts and solutions to climate change, air pollution, and biodiversity loss.

Grace became a driving force behind our first Citizens’ Climate Assembly, which took place across two weekends in the summer of 2023. Fifty residents were chosen at random from across our diverse communities to come together, learn about the climate emergency, and deliberate how we overcome the barriers to becoming a net zero city by 2040. The assembly produced several recommendations which have informed the evolution of our Climate Emergency Action Plan. Due to the success of this initiative, we’re holding more assemblies to continue community involvement in local decision-making.

The Role:

As a Senior Arboricultural Officer, you too can make a powerful contribution. Westminster contains a rich mix of neighbourhoods – Chinatown, Soho, Covent Garden, St John’s Wood and Knightsbridge. All are key to establishing London’s reputation as one of the world’s greenest cities. Help breathe oxygen into the capital through planting and caring for its trees.

In this role, you will take on responsibility for maintenance and planting of trees in the public realm, including highway trees, and trees in parks and cemeteries.

The Council will draw on your expertise in relation to best practice for tree planting and management. You will use your professional knowledge to specify management operations and assess and manage tree risks. You will ensure that Westminster is compliant with legislation and policy, and manage and coordinate the out-of-hours processes to ensure urgent arboricultural matters are responded to swiftly. You will maintain an up-to-date information system of tree maintenance and planting too.

You will also be a key player in contract management and compliance, and make valuable contributions to a wide programme of public realm initiatives.

As a member of our specialist Tree Team, you will have the opportunity to contribute to other areas of our work such as managing proposals to carry out works to protected trees, and contributing to evolving environmental policies.

At times, you will represent the City Council at external meetings and deputise for the manager.

At Westminster, it’s not just the trees that grow and thrive. We nurture our people too. Join us in creating a sustainable, highly effective organisation that our residents can be proud of.

Please refer to the for more information.

About You:

You are confident and enthusiastic about all things arboriculture – backed by significant post-qualification experience. You will have a sound working knowledge of arboricultural theory and practice, matched with a history in contract management, budget planning and performance monitoring in relation to trees. Plus, you have used tree information management systems and applied them to successful service delivery.

Having worked in a service delivery role, you know how to maintain stakeholder relationships and resolve issues in a timely manner. Highly organised, you will be capable of planning and managing budgets and resources, and will demonstrate meticulous attention to detail. As you will deal with a variety of stakeholders, you will need a talent for negotiation and influencing other people. Even on complex issues, you will be able to communicate clearly and effectively, foresee problems, and use your expert technical knowledge to resolve them.

Team building will be crucial too. You will be quick to establish working relationships, motivate, and lead by example, showing how you invest in self-improvement and overcome obstacles.

You will bring a degree in environmental/ arboricultural or related discipline. Along with a professional qualification in a related subject area (minimum diploma level 3 qualification in arboriculture or equivalent). You hold – or are willing to work towards – further qualifications, such as a level 4 qualification in arboriculture and a tree inspection qualification (LANTRA 3-day course).
