Senior Software Engineer – Event Processing (Royal Mail Group)
Royal Mail is undergoing one of the most significant digital transformations in its long history — and you could be at the heart of it. Our Event Processing platform powers the flow of data across the organisation, enabling millions of items to move efficiently through our network every day. We’re building the next generation of this critical system, and we’re looking for engineers who want to shape the future of a national institution.
The Opportunity
As a Senior Software Engineer, you’ll play a pivotal role in designing and delivering high‑quality, highly scalable solutions within a complex and evolving technology landscape. You’ll help define the strategic direction of our event processing capabilities, ensuring they are robust, modern, and ready to support the next era of Royal Mail’s operations.
This is a hands‑on engineering role where you’ll collaborate with senior developers, platform engineers, DevOps specialists, and automation testers to deliver reliable, maintainable, production‑ready software.
What You’ll Be Doing
Delivering high‑quality, efficient solutions into a large‑scale, complex estate
Working closely with senior developers to solve real business challenges with elegant technical solutions
Identifying and applying the right technologies to build reliable, maintainable systems
Collaborating with platform engineering and DevOps teams to release incremental functionality into production
Contributing to the design of components and systems that meet key business needs
Working with automation testers to ensure comprehensive system test coverage
Supporting production systems, troubleshooting incidents, and implementing robust resolutions
What You Bring
We’re looking for someone who can bring both expertise and fresh thinking — someone who thrives in a modern engineering environment and is passionate about continuous improvement.
Strong Java expertise (polyglot developers highly valued)
Experience designing and building microservices at scale
Hands‑on experience with event‑driven architectures (Kafka or equivalent)
Solid understanding of TDD, mocking, and CI/CD pipelines
Experience building RESTful APIs using JSON
Strong background in Infrastructure as Code and automated deployment practices
Who You Are
A confident communicator — in person and in code
Committed to software craftsmanship and engineering excellence
Proactive, curious, and always looking for ways to improve
Comfortable working in agile environments (Scrum, Kanban)
A capable generalist with a holistic approach to engineering challenges
Someone who can bring ideas, experience, and energy to large‑scale modernisation programmes
