Could you be our Fleet Maintenance Engineer, assisting in the mechanical and electrical maintenance of the Class 701 fleet in a safety-critical environment?
Your future role
Take on a new challenge and apply your engineering expertise in support of the Fleet Operator. Reporting to the Shift Production Manager, you will be part of a small technical team dedicated to ensuring the reliability and availability of our Aventra platform trains. You’ll assist in supervising maintenance activities, conducting detailed fault finding, and carrying out repair work, all while adhering to the company’s processes and safety regulations. Shift patterns will vary as follows: 5 days, 5 off / 4 nights, 5 off / 2 days, 3 nights and 4 off.
Day-to-day, you’ll be responsible for optimizing maintenance on trains, providing engineering advice on key systems, and diagnosing faults. Your contributions will help ensure the operator meets reliability targets while maintaining compliance with safety standards.
We’ll also look to you to:
- Provide expertise on train systems engineering for the vehicle and key systems such as the Train Control and Management System (TCMS), Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC), propulsion systems, brakes, doors, and on-train communications systems.
- Serve as a point of contact for in-service fault resolution, liaising with Production and control room staff.
- Optimize maintenance schedules and assist with detailed fault finding and diagnostics.
- Propose immediate and long-term solutions for maintenance challenges.
- Monitor warranty issues and collaborate with supplier technical teams.
- Attend to faulty trains in service, conducting component replacements and modifications.
- Support root cause analysis using methodologies like Failure Reporting, Analysis, and Corrective Action System (FRACAS), 8D (a problem-solving methodology), and the Production Part Approval Process (PPAP).
- Ensure the sourcing of correct replacement parts.
- Assist the operator in updating maintenance instructions and liaising with Technical Publications and Central Engineering teams.
- Monitor train reliability and availability performance, issuing monthly reports.
- Conduct remote monitoring of trains using the Orbita system and download data from onboard train data recorders.
- Run diagnostic software for various train systems and conduct necessary system software updates.
- Address obsolescence and mitigate associated risks.
- Provide engineering support for safety-related incidents, including Non-Injury Related Incidents (NIRs), representing the Customer when interfacing with Design Authorities and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs).
- Contribute to Health and Safety initiatives daily and share insights for design improvements based on global fleet experience.
- Produce strong written reports on findings and recommendations.
