Schools in the area reflect this by placing inclusion, respect, and holistic child development at the heart of everything they do. The successful SEN Teaching Assistant will become a trusted and valued part of a supportive school team, helping pupils feel safe, understood, and capable of success.

About the Position

As an SEN Teaching Assistant in Southall, you will work closely with pupils who require additional support to access learning. These pupils may have a range of needs, including Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), ADHD, speech and language difficulties, social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH), sensory processing challenges, or learning delays.

Your role may involve providing one-to-one support for a pupil with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), supporting small intervention groups , or assisting across the classroom to ensure learning is accessible for all. You will help pupils manage their emotions, develop positive behaviour strategies, and build confidence both academically and socially.

This role requires consistency, empathy, and a calm approach, particularly when supporting pupils who may struggle with regulation, communication, or changes to routine.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support pupils with special educational needs throughout the school day

  • Deliver targeted interventions under the guidance of the class teacher and SENCO

  • Implement strategies and accommodations outlined in EHCPs and support plans

  • Support emotional regulation, behaviour management, and social interaction

  • Assist pupils with transitions between activities and environments

  • Adapt learning resources to suit individual learning styles and abilities

  • Encourage independence, resilience, and self-confidence

  • Provide feedback and observations to teaching and SEN staff

  • Support pupils during break times, lunch, and extracurricular activities

Depending on the needs of the pupils, the role may involve aspects of personal care or physical support. Full training and guidance will be provided, and dignity and respect will always be prioritised.

Who Schools in Southall Are Looking For

This role is well suited to individuals who are:

  • Patient, kind, and emotionally resilient

  • Passionate about working with children with SEN

  • Comfortable supporting pupils with behavioural or emotional challenges

  • Strong communicators who can work collaboratively with staff and families

  • Reliable, flexible, and proactive in their approach

Experience working with children with additional needs is highly desirable, but schools in Southall are also keen to hear from candidates with transferable skills from backgrounds such as care work, youth services, mentoring, psychology, early years, or community support roles.

Graduates considering future careers in teaching, child psychology, social work, or therapy-related professions will find this role particularly valuable for gaining hands-on experience.
