Marchant Recruitment
London

Location: Islington, North London
Job Title: Behaviour Mentor – Primary & Nursery
Contract Type: Full-Time, Term-Time Only
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
Start Date: ASAP or Next Academic Term

School Overview

This inclusive and well-regarded Primary and Nursery School in Islington is committed to supporting the academic, emotional, and social development of every child. Situated within a diverse and vibrant North London community, the school places strong emphasis on early intervention, emotional wellbeing, and positive behaviour for learning.

The leadership team recognises that the early years are a crucial period for emotional development and that behavioural needs are best addressed through consistency, nurture, and strong relationships. As part of the school’s ongoing investment in pastoral support, they are seeking a dedicated Behaviour Mentor to work across Nursery, Reception, and Key Stage 1.

Role Purpose

The Behaviour Mentor will support pupils who experience difficulties with emotional regulation, behaviour management, social interaction, or engagement with learning. Children supported in this role may present with SEMH needs, ASD, ADHD, attachment-related difficulties, or delayed emotional development.

You will work as a consistent and trusted adult, supporting pupils both in and out of the classroom. Through positive reinforcement, structured routines, and nurturing relationships, you will help children develop emotional awareness, self-regulation skills, and confidence within the school environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide targeted 1:1 behavioural and emotional support

  • Deliver small group interventions focusing on emotional literacy

  • Support children within Nursery and classroom settings

  • Assist pupils during transitions and changes in routine

  • Support behaviour during playtimes and lunchtimes

  • Implement individual behaviour support plans consistently

  • Use play-based, restorative, and trauma-informed approaches

  • Work closely with class teachers, EYFS staff, and the SENCO

  • Observe, assess, and track pupil behaviour and progress

  • Maintain detailed records and contribute to review meetings

  • Build strong, trusting relationships with parents and carers

  • Support safeguarding and child protection procedures

The Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will be calm, empathetic, and emotionally resilient, with a strong commitment to supporting young children. You should understand that behaviour is a form of communication and be confident responding to challenging situations with patience and consistency.

You should demonstrate:

  • Experience in a Primary, Nursery, or EYFS setting

  • Knowledge of SEND, SEMH, and early childhood development

  • A nurturing and consistent approach to behaviour support

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills

  • Emotional resilience and adaptability

Relevant qualifications in childcare, education, psychology, youth work, or mental health are desirable but not essential.

Training and Professional Development

The school offers comprehensive training and ongoing professional development. Behaviour Mentors receive regular supervision, access to specialist CPD, and opportunities to work alongside experienced SEN and pastoral professionals. This role is ideal for candidates considering careers in teaching, SEN support, or educational psychology.

What the School Offers

  • A supportive and inclusive working environment

  • Strong leadership and a collaborative staff team

  • High-quality training and CPD opportunities

  • A rewarding role with meaningful impact

  • Opportunities for long-term and permanent employment

Safeguarding

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. All appointments are subject to enhanced DBS checks, references, and safer recruitment procedures.
