About Us:

THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF KAKOLI’S PASSION AND DRIVE

Children’s Services in Westminster City Council is a world of extraordinary stories. Where inspirational people like Kakoli are dedicated to encouraging everyone they work with to be the very best they can be.

Ever since she was a child, Kakoli has believed that children are the ones who’ll change the world for the better. Who’ll create the future we all wish for. And she always knew her calling was to get on the front line and help those who might not be as fortunate as herself.

Driven and passionate about making a difference, she first joined Westminster as a Social Work Assistant, and her managers immediately saw she had huge potential, so they encouraged her to apply to study for a degree in social work. She passed with flying colours, and over the next fourteen years worked as a frontline Social Worker, a Senior Social Worker, a Deputy Service Manager and is now one of our Service Managers.

Kakoli’s vision is as clear now as it was all those years ago – to encourage and support children, and help them grow in safe, vibrant communities. Her achievements are many, but she’s most proud of the fact that these days Westminster doesn’t ‘do things for families’ but ‘does things with families’. And she believes this huge but subtle difference to the way we work has allowed thousands of children in Westminster to fulfil their potential and live their dreams.

The Role:

As a Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Independent Travel Trainer with Children’s Services you can make your own powerful contribution to our success. Joining the small, friendly and dedicated team that runs the Westminster and Kensington & Chelsea’s Bi-borough Travel Training Scheme, you’ll provide young people over the age of 11 who have Special Educational Needs with the support, skills and training they need to travel safely and independently on London’s transport networks. Promoting the scheme to children, young people, their families, schools and other agencies, we’ll also expect you to work to develop more participation and a wider understanding of this positive and rewarding initiative.

Completing detailed assessments for young people identified as potential candidates for the scheme, you’ll liaise with SEND Officers, schools, parents and carers to develop individual training and personal safety plans, organise travel routes and undertake detailed risk assessments. At the end of each training session you’ll complete a report that identifies each young person’s progress and the areas that need further development, and as the work continues, provide an evaluation of the success of the scheme.

Your additional responsibilities will include contributing to the development and continuous improvement of Home to School Travel Assistance services, providing operational feedback, and supporting the team with the implementation of enhancements to our work. We’ll also expect you to help ensure the smooth running of the service by providing occasional administrative support to the SEND Travel team during the school holidays, work that will include liaising with parents, schools and other council teams.

Please refer to the for more information.

About You:

With plenty of experience collaborating with families, schools and professionals to deliver personalised support plans for children and young people with SEND, including conducting risk assessments and monitoring progress, you’ll have the ability to help people develop their life skills and independence, with a particular focus on travel, mobility and personal safety. With this in mind you should have a proactive approach to improving service delivery and supporting positive outcomes for the children and young people you work with.

Friendly, approachable and responsive, and with excellent English language skills, you’ll be a confident communicator, a creative problem solver and capable of identifying new ideas and ways of doing things. It’s important that you know the geography of Westminster and Kensington & Chelsea, and in addition to being able to ensure the safety of young people with SEND by identifying and mitigating risk, you will be skilled at keeping accurate records of training sessions and assessing progress against individual plans.

Our Travel Training scheme operates across a wide range of schools, colleges and other locations, and involves working early mornings and later in the afternoon, so it’s important that you have a flexible and agile approach to your duties and responsibilities.

Westminster City Council is committed to supporting Care Leavers into the workplace. Care Leavers seeking their first job and who wish to be considered under our scheme, will automatically be invited to interview should they meet the essential criteria for the role.
