Working as a Student Ambassador

What We Do

Middlesex University organises a variety of events, both on and off campus, involving young learners, prospective and current students. Our Student Ambassadors are advocates for the University and its facilities as well as acting as models for new and current students alike.

Duties and responsibilities
Your as a Student Ambassador:

Being a Student Ambassador means that you will enjoy a great variety of work. Your duties may include showing people around the campus at our Open Days and Postgraduate Open Evenings, giving short presentations or facilitating workshops and running activities for young learners at on-campus events, and attending careers fairs in local schools and colleges. You could be asked to support the wider Marketing Team occasionally with involvement in Social Media posts or support with developing content for online platforms. The work is flexible and part time, meaning you can fit it around your studies.

Skills and experience
As a Student Ambassador you should be:

  • Interested - You will not gain the attention of young people if you are not interested in what they have to say to you.
  • Approachable - Young people will open up more and respond better if you make it easy for them to talk to you.
  • Proactive – Both at events but also the admin side of the scheme. We need students who are responsive and can react well to different situations.
  • Tolerant – To encourage engagement a great deal of tolerance is required as there may be many factors or barriers preventing them from communicating with you openly.
  • Respectful - If you can demonstrate respect for the young people no matter what difficulties they may be going through, they will in turn respect you for understanding them and showing patience.
  • Inspirational – You are one step ahead of them on their journey, talk from your own experiences and help to support their aspirations
  • Motivational - You may be the only model they have in their lives. BUT remember to maintain suitable boundaries.
  • Enthusiastic - Showing enthusiasm for the work you do with young people does rub off on them and encourages them to do well, and it will also make the experience memorable for them.
  • A good listener - You may have to act as a sounding board for young people to release frustration or anxiety, and you will need to be able to make sensible suggestions for overcoming these.
  • Positive - Being positive encourages a positive response and helps boost confidence and self-esteem – don’t dwell on failings and negative feelings, highlight positive ones.

Diversity and Inclusion:

Middlesex University is host to a variety of different cultures and beliefs. As a Student Ambassador, it is not only your job to respect the individuality of all students but also champion and elevate different beliefs and views where appropriate. As part of this scheme, you will often work outside of the University for various jobs s & events. Student Ambassadors act as representatives for the University – you must always hold and promote our values in any you are a part of.
