AtkinsRéalis
London
Job Description

Overview

If you're an experienced Human Factors professional with a strong track record in high-hazard industries and enjoy applying your expertise across a diverse range of sectors, you'll have the opportunity to work within genuinely collaborative and supportive teams while benefiting from the flexibility needed to balance the commitments that matter to you. The AtkinsRéalis Human Factors team has an established presence across multiple UK locations, including London, Bristol, Manchester and Derby. Our team delivers meaningful and engaging work across a variety of high-hazard industries, including Nuclear, Rail, Defence and Infrastructure. As a Principal Consultant, you will play an important role in delivering impactful projects, applying a broad range of Human Factors methodologies while building and strengthening relationships with both AtkinsRéalis colleagues and external clients. We welcome applications from experienced Principal Human Factors professionals who are motivated by leading project delivery, cultivating client relationships and contributing to the continued growth and success of our Human Factors capability.

This role offers much more than project delivery alone. You will contribute to the strategic growth and development of our Human Factors team while helping to support the professional development of junior colleagues. You'll also be encouraged to make the most of mentoring opportunities that support your own career aspirations and help ensure your interests within Human Factors are reflected in the work you undertake.

Your role

As a Principal member of our Human Factors team, you will provide visible technical and project leadership, supporting clients and delivery teams as they navigate complex challenges and identify the most effective path forward. You will play a key role in developing and maintaining trusted client relationships, recognising opportunities for growth, shaping Human Factors strategies and scopes, and contributing to the direction of multidisciplinary programmes. You will also support the ongoing development of our Human Factors capability, helping to foster technical excellence, consistency and continuous improvement across the team.

Typical assignments may include:
  • Leading Human Factors and Ergonomics work packages for clients.
  • Providing technical leadership across complex programmes of work.
  • Coordinating and managing technical delivery in line with project programmes.
  • Acting as the Human Factors technical lead on projects and programmes.
  • Leading and contributing to AtkinsRéalis bids, proposals and strategic initiatives.
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams across Nuclear, Rail, Defence, Infrastructure and other Energy Transition sectors.
  • Through your technical expertise, relationship-building skills and collaborative approach, you will help clients achieve successful project outcomes while supporting the continued growth and reputation of our Human Factors practice.

About you

You are motivated by making a positive contribution to both project outcomes and the ongoing development of the Human Factors team. You enjoy building trusted relationships, sharing knowledge, and working collaboratively to deliver high-quality solutions. You bring a proactive and supportive approach, taking ownership of your work while helping others succeed.

You are likely to bring:
  • A degree, postgraduate qualification, or equivalent experience in Human Factors, Applied Psychology, or a related discipline.
  • Strong experience in leading and delivering Human Factors work packages, providing technical leadership and engaging effectively with clients in high-hazard or regulated industries.
  • Proven expertise in the application of Human Factors methods, techniques, standards, and guidance to support successful project outcomes.
  • Experience planning, managing, and integrating Human Factors activities across complex projects and programmes.
  • Excellent communication, report-writing, and presentation skills, with the ability to translate complex information into clear and practical insights.
  • The ability to build trusted relationships and collaborate effectively with clients, multidisciplinary teams, regulators, and other key stakeholders.
  • Experience in areas such as Safety Case development, regulatory engagement, Human Factors assessment, Human Reliability Assessment, Training Needs Analysis, or Operator Safety Claims Requirements management.
  • Additional strengths in areas such as project management, business development, CAD/visualisation, public speaking, published work, or membership/fellowship of a recognised professional body.
  • In addition, you will be willing to travel to client sites as required and will be excited by the opportunity to contribute to the continued growth, innovation, and success of AtkinsRéalis' Human Factors capability.
