Senior Technical Product Manager

Guardian Media Group
London

Join our team at the Guardian and be a part of a diverse and inclusive global organisation that delivers fearless, investigative journalism and holds power to account. Our team of award-winning journalists, cutting-edge commercial professionals and industry-leading digital experts are committed to making a difference and represent a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives. We offer a challenging and exciting environment for career development, with a focus on training, growth and fostering an inclusive culture.

We are now looking for a Senior Technical Product Manager to join the Apps Platform team. The Apps platform team is responsible for developing native mobile applications which are state of the art, embracing the latest developments in the mobile platforms that they depend on. The Senior Technical Product Manager will assess the technical priorities of the team and set the product roadmap, balancing this with the product-based priorities of the team’s stakeholders, the Apps Development team. Partnering with the engineering manager, the Senior Technical Product Manager will report to senior product leadership within the organisation to ensure that the higher-level ambitions are met.

This is an ideal opportunity for someone familiar with the Mobile Application market place, aware of upcoming changes and deadlines in the Mobile OS platforms that will form the team’s roadmap.

About the role

  • Own the product roadmap for our iOS and Android platform team, ensuring alignment with the product development teams. Finding the right trade-offs against product team priorities against building platform capabilities.
  • Collaborate with engineering, data and other stakeholder teams to identify new platform opportunities.
  • Alongside the engineering manager, prioritise the team’s work, balancing business requirements, technical needs and UX.
  • Identify upcoming changes in the Mobile OS Platforms that will keep the Guardian’s Mobile Apps at the forefront of the mobile landscape.
  • Identify ways in which the Apps Platform team can help deliver value to the end users (app teams) by reducing cognitive load, reducing maintenance overhead, improving security, reliability, and operational excellence.
  • Analyse user data and key performance indicators (KPIs) to identify areas for improvement and measure the impact of platform delivery and its impact on developer experience.
  • Treat internal tools as products, defining users, gathering feedback and sharing successes.

About you

  • Extensive experience in technical product management, ideally within digital media, publishing or commercial platforms
  • Proven technical product leadership abilities, including evidence of close partnership with engineering and data teams
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, capable of influencing across teams and functions
  • Ability to deeply understand engineer pain points
  • Data-informed mindset with experience using performance metrics to guide decision-making
  • Purpose-driven and sympathetic towards Guardian values
