Hours

Normal hours on site at the NT are 8am - 4pm. There may be rare occasions where these may have to be changed to suit the requirements of the business. You may be required to work in confined spaces or at height. PPE and training will be provided.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

• Attending department meetings and M & E project briefings
• Attending kick off meetings, pre-tender meetings, design meetings etc
• Escorting M & E contractors during the survey stage
• With the continued support of the Senior M & E engineer ensure the various project locations are technically compliant for continued safe working
• Regular monitoring of M & E project site activities and attend progress meetings
• Shadow and support the Senior M & E engineer with their day-to-day activities
• Understanding and taking part in the project/s snagging process
• Project close out and handover to facilities, end users etc
• Work towards managing an M & E project of their own
• Ensure that college work is completed and kept up to date in a timely manner
• Attend day to day project progress, design and specification meetings
• Comply with the NT’s policies and procedures
• Carry out other reasonable duties as requested by the Senior M & E manager

What you'll learn

• Apply engineering principles, using relevant scientific, theoretical and technical know-how to solve well-defined building services engineering problems.
• Apply building services engineering techniques, procedures and methods, and review the results, when measuring and testing, designing, installing, commissioning, maintaining or operating building services engineering systems.
• Employ a range of advanced mathematical, statistical and data interpretation tools, using analytical and computational methods to interpret and solve well-defined building services engineering problems.
• Interpret and compare performance information to choose compliant materials, components or parts.
• Select and use technical literature and other sources of information and data to address well-defined building services engineering problems.
• Produce and interpret building services engineering technical drawings, designs, and models, using analytical and computer-based software packages, recognising the limitations of the software used.
• Produce building services engineering technical solutions in accordance with relevant industry standards, procedures, codes of practice, regulations, and legislation.
• Comply with, and encourage others to demonstrate, statutory health, safety and welfare policies, procedures and regulation.

Training schedule

The apprenticeship is split between the National Theatre (NT) and City of Westminster College (CWC). As well as working at the National Theatre, you will also study for a Level 4 Building Services Engineering Technician apprenticeship. You will be given time during the week to study, and attendance at college and the timely completion of assignments are a compulsory part of your job role.

Other requirements

The successful applicant will be required to undertake a Back Check which will cover a basic DBS Criminal Record Check and Credit Check. Being comfortable working at height.
