Job summary
This is a locum anaesthetic consultant post for a motivated candidate interested in anaesthesia for obstetrics & major cancer surgery. The post covers sessions on labour ward including elective caesarean section lists at Queen Charlotte's Hospital and major general surgery lists at Hammersmith Hospital.

QCCH is 1 of the oldest maternity hospitals in the UK internationally renowned for the care of women with complex medical and obstetric problems and is also a tertiary referral unit for fetal care. Specialist services include maternal medicine, dedicated obstetric medical clinics for women with haemoglobinopathies and other haematological disease, cardiorespiratory disease, renal and liver disease. We have a 2-bedded maternity HDU with a dedicated midwifery team, able to provide non-invasive ventilatory support and manage full invasive monitoring. QCCH is a designated centre for the management of abnormally invasive placenta. This post requires subspecialty interest, experience and training in obstetric anaesthesia.

Hammersmith Hospital provides complex cancer surgical services in gynaecology, endocrine, hepatobiliary and upper GI specialties and is a regional and national referral centre for these specialities as well as a busy kidney transplant centre. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to deliver peri-operative care to patients undergoing these complex procedures, including providing anaesthesia for these specialties in our new robotic theatre suite.

Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will join a dedicated team of obstetric anaesthetic consultants at QCCH providing daytime cover for labour ward and separate consultant cover for all day elective caesarean section lists. At QCCH the delivery rate is approximately 5,700 per annum with a caesarean section rate of approximately 50% and a regional analgesia rate exceeding 60%. There are two newly refurbished operating theatres with four recovery beds, two level 2 HDU beds, four large high risk delivery rooms to accommodate multiple and complex births and a further ten delivery rooms on the labour ward.

In addition to sessions at QCCH, the post holder will be expected to provide anaesthesia for a variety of surgical specialities at the Hammersmith Hospital including upper GI, hepatobiliary, endocrine, gynae-oncology, urology and renal including transplantation. The job plan will be flexible and formulated in partnership with the successful candidate. This arrangement allows us to respond to service requirements efficiently, as well as facilitating CPD, educational and annual leave requirements.

Although two hospitals, QCCH and Hammersmith are considered as one anaesthetic department.

The job includes a 1:8 on call component which covers obstetrics only. There is a dedicated resident anaesthetic registrar (ST5-7 level) covering labour ward.

Job responsibilities
This is a full-time post of 10 PAs: 8 PAs for direct clinical care for elective work, 1 PA for on call and 1 SPA.

Timetable
The content of the job plan will reflect an interest in obstetrics and major complex cancer surgery. Some sessions are delivered flexibly depending on service needs and the skills and interests of the successful candidate.

Each session of four hours attracts 1.25 PAs to include pre- and postoperative care.

The anaesthetic department at QCCH and Hammersmith Hospital is one of three anaesthetic departments within Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. The successful candidate may occasionally be asked to cover anaesthetic work at Charing Cross Hospital or St Marys Hospital, depending on need.

The on call commitment for the post holder will be a prospective 1:8 non-resident rota covering obstetrics. There is a dedicated resident anaesthetist (ST5-7 level) covering labour ward out of hours.

The SPA allocation will be 1 per week (4 hours). SPA time is given to support continuing professional development, teaching, clinical governance and preparation for appraisal.

• On GMC's register with a Licence to Practice or eligible to apply for GMC registration and a Licence to Practice
• On GMC's Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the register by the date of the interviews or eligible for specialist registration

Knowledge/ Skills

• Training and experience in obstetric anaesthesia to Special Interest Area (SIA) level or equivalent
• Training and experience in anaesthesia for major general surgery including the specialist areas of HPB, endocrine, upper GI and renal surgery to Stage 3 training or equivalent
• IT skills and computer literacy
