About Us:

The Environment & Communities Directorate in Westminster City Council is a world of extraordinary stories. Where dedicated people like Grace are using their skills and passion to progress environmental action in the heart of London.

It was at university where Grace first started campaigning for improved recycling facilities, water refill stations, and other eco-friendly initiatives. When she saw the real difference people could make when they came together, she knew she wanted to dedicate her career to community action for the planet.

When she joined us as Principal Engagement Officer, Climate Emergency, she quickly established herself as a passionate advocate for community outreach, engaging various stakeholders across Westminster in the social causes, impacts and solutions to climate change, air pollution, and biodiversity loss.

Grace became a driving force behind our first Citizens’ Climate Assembly, which took place across two weekends in the summer of 2023. Fifty residents were chosen at random from across our diverse communities to come together, learn about the climate emergency, and deliberate how we overcome the barriers to becoming a net zero city by 2040. The assembly produced several recommendations which have informed the evolution of our Climate Emergency Action Plan. Due to the success of this initiative, we’re holding more assemblies to continue community involvement in local decision-making.

The Role:

As an Arboricultural Officer, you can make your own powerful contribution to the environment in Westminster. London is recognised as one of the world’s greenest cities and Westminster lies at its urban heart. We are home to four famous Royal Parks, but the communal spaces on our housing estates are also vital to the quality of life for local residents and biodiversity.

In this role, you’ll focus on trees on land held by the housing department, surveying the condition of trees and managing their planting and ongoing maintenance. This will include using your professional skills to specify tree works and find new tree planting locations, managing a programme of works and keeping records of tree survey data. As a member of our specialist Tree Team, you will have the opportunity to contribute to other areas of our work such as contract management and compliance, managing proposals to carry out works to protected trees, and contributing to evolving environmental and planning policies.

Please refer to the for more information.

About You:

You are confident and enthusiastic about all things arboriculture – backed by post-qualification experience in a similar role. You will have a sound working knowledge of arboricultural theory and practice, and some background in contract management and health and safety procedures in arboriculture would be helpful. Plus, you will have used tree information management systems and applied them to successful service delivery.

Having worked in a service delivery role, you know how to maintain stakeholder relationships and resolve issues in a timely manner. Highly organised, you will be capable of planning and managing time and resources, and will demonstrate meticulous attention to detail. As you will deal with a variety of stakeholders, you will need a talent for negotiation and influencing other people.

You will have a professional qualification in a related subject area (minimum diploma level 3 qualification in arboriculture or equivalent). You will hold – or are willing to work towards – further qualifications, such as a level 4 qualification in arboriculture and a tree inspection qualification (LANTRA 3-day course).
