A specialist education provision in Newham, East London is seeking a dedicated Graduate SEN Teaching Assistant to support vulnerable young people who are unable to cope within mainstream education. This role is particularly suited to graduates aspiring to careers in education, educational psychology, youth work, social care, or therapeutic professions , and who are committed to making a long-term difference.
The Opportunity
As a Graduate SEN Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with pupils who may:
- Be unable to access learning within a mainstream school environment.
- Have experienced fixed-term or permanent exclusion.
- Come from disadvantaged or complex family backgrounds.
- Present with social, emotional, mental health, or behavioural needs.
- Be at risk of disengaging from education altogether.
You will play a pivotal role in supporting these students to remain in education, helping them to re-engage with learning and develop positive routines and behaviours.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide 1:1 and small-group support for pupils with additional and complex needs.
- Support students in managing behaviour, emotional regulation, and engagement in learning.
- Build positive, professional relationships founded on trust and consistency.
- Work collaboratively with teachers, SEN professionals, and pastoral staff.
- Liaise effectively with parents and carers to support student progress and attendance.
- Assist in delivering tailored educational and behavioural support plans.
- Maintain clear boundaries while offering consistent encouragement and guidance.
Person Specification
The successful candidate will:
- Demonstrate resilience, emotional maturity, and professionalism.
- Have a calm, confident approach and the ability to manage challenging behaviour.
- Show genuine commitment to supporting young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.
- Be patient, empathetic, and firm when required.
The ideal applicant will also:
- Hold a 2:1 or above in Psychology, Sports Science, Sociology , or a related discipline.
- Have a strong interest in SEN, behaviour support, or alternative provision.
- Have prior experience working with young people (desirable, but not essential).
Graduates from Psychology and Sports-related disciplines are particularly well suited to this role due to the behavioural, emotional, and physical regulation elements involved.
