As a Registered Nurse/HCPC Practitioner, you will be responsible for supporting your manager in ensuring that our service user's needs are met, through the delivery of high-quality care. As a centre of excellence, you will offer a person-centred approach that promotes independence and well-being. You will:
- Provide expert, holistic care of a high standard to both perioperative patients and their relatives within King's College Hospital.
- Take direct managerial responsibility for the clinical area in the absence of, or as delegated by, the Senior Nurse/Service Manager.
- Assist in the leadership and development of an identified group of practitioners within the unit.
- Act as a clinical resource within the unit and, where necessary, across the Theatre Care Group.
- Serve as a positive role model to junior staff members.
- Take charge of operating lists and act as Floor Coordinator, delegating tasks appropriately, ensuring adequate skill mix, troubleshooting issues, and escalating concerns using your professional knowledge and experience.
As part of the Liver Transplant Team, you will participate in the on-call rota. This includes supporting liver transplants or multi-organ retrievals for the National Organ Retrieval Service Team, either as a Scrub Practitioner or an Organ Perfusion Practitioner.
Main duties of the job
- Adhere to the NMC/HCPC Code of Professional Conduct at all times.
- Demonstrate clinical expertise in the care of all patients receiving treatment within the department.
- Ensure the safe running of the department by coordinating operating lists, solving problems, or escalating issues to the senior management team.
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care on an ongoing basis, coordinating the clinical team’s contributions.
- Accurately assimilate and interpret clinical information, take appropriate action, and report significant changes promptly.
- Act as a resource for colleagues, providing accurate information, teaching, support, and guidance to the multidisciplinary team, junior staff, and students.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records reflecting patients’ conditions and the care provided.
- Implement Clinical Guidelines and actively participate in auditing practices in collaboration with the Line Manager and Practice Development team.
- Ensure practice is evidence-based and support the development of local policies and protocols.
- Uphold high standards of perioperative care in line with existing policies and standards.
- Support continuous quality improvement, including participation in audits and implementation of improvements.
- Act as a mentor to junior staff, supporting orientation, supervision, and professional development with input from Line Managers and Practice Development staff.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Work within, and accept responsibility for, maintaining agreed levels of clinical competence, ensuring continued clinical relevance as new technologies are introduced.
- Keep up to date with NMC/HCPC, Trust, and Care Group policies and guidelines, and adhere to them at all times.
- Be a fully active and committed member of the multidisciplinary team within the Care Group.
- Uphold high standards of perioperative care in accordance with existing policies and standards.
- Support the process of continuous quality improvement by assisting in audits to formally evaluate standards of care and supporting the implementation of changes based on the findings.
- Support the Senior/Management Team in Liver Theatres by ensuring the efficient management of operating lists. This includes Theatre Floor Coordinating responsibilities such as preventing late starts or overruns, managing staffing with appropriate skill mix, mentoring staff, and promoting training and development. Good communication is essential in this role.
- Participate in team meetings as required by your Team Leader.
- Demonstrate insight into your own professional development, contributing to the identification of educational and clinical training needs in conjunction with the Clinical Coordinator.
- Participate in your own Individual Performance Review. After suitable training, take responsibility for timely performance reviews for your team of junior staff.
- Ensure your educational commitment meets the requirements of your professional body, and that mandatory training certificates are kept up to date, in liaison with your Line Manager.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of staff and patient records in line with Trust policy. Any unauthorised breach of confidentiality will result in disciplinary action.
- Ensure that acceptable standards of data protection are maintained in accordance with the Data Protection Act.
- Observe the rules, policies, and procedures in place at King’s College Hospital.
- Carry out your duties as an employee and service provider with due regard to the Trust’s Equal Opportunities Policy.
- Under the Health & Safety at Work Act, the post holder has a general duty of care for the health, safety, and well-being of themselves, colleagues, visitors, and patients within the hospital, in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance responsibilities associated with the role.

Essential criteria
- 1st level Registered General Nurse/HCPC Registered
- Further professional studies relevant to the clinical area
- Mentorship programme or equivalent teaching qualification
