King's College Hospital is offering a full time position to join the leadership team as a Band 7 Perioperative Assessment Practitioner The Sister is a senior nursing leader responsible for delivering safe, effective, and high-quality patient care. The post holder will ensure patients are optimised for surgery, reducing on the day cancellations and improving surgical outcomes through comprehensive assessment, planning and coordination of care.

Main duties of the job

The Band 7 will support and develop multidisciplinary staff, promoting a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and patient-centred care. They will undertake advanced perioperative assessment, including complex patients, to determine fitness for surgery. They will identify and manage perioperative risks, initiating appropriate investigations, referrals and optimisations plans. They will lead the day to day coordination of the pre-assessment service, ensuring patient efficient patient flow, reduce on the day cancelation through effective patient preparation and pathway management.

They will provide clinical leadership, supervision and support to junior staff promoting high standards of care.

The role includes contributing to audit, quality improvement and service development initiatives

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

· To act as a professional role model

· To lead and co-ordinate their Pre-operative assessment team, taking continuing responsibility for the management and organisation of the clinical area

· The post holder will be expected to lead on the development and expansion of the Centralised Pre-assessment Services to meet the demands of the theatre reset and recovery program.

· They will be expected to develop, lead and manage a team of pre-assessment nurses and Health Care Assistants to provide an efficient, expert pre-assessment service whilst maintaining their own clinical skills to promote confidence in the nurse-led team.

· The post holder will work closely with the POA Delivery Manager, building strong relationships between the pre-assessment, administrative and management teams to facilitate a streamlined and timely assessment and booking process.

· They will lead on a number of patient care audits and be responsible for the development and maintenance of all pre-assessment related documentation including patient information leaflets, training records, productivity data, patient pathways, SOPs, work instructions and any other relevant supporting documentation.

· To ensure a high standard of care and the well being of patients at all times

· To be responsible for the development, teaching, appraisal and well- being of all staff, both trained and untrained

· To be responsible for managing the designated budgets

· To deputise in the absence of the Matron for POA management

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • RGN or Registered Operating Department Practitioner
  • A UK recognised Degree in Nursing / Operating Department Practice or equivalent or evidence of commitment to a degree pathway completion (level 6 study), or willingness to undertake a degree pathway.
  • Post-registration teaching/mentorship (practice assessor) qualification with significant mentorship experience
  • Experience of deputising for senior department staff

Desirable criteria
  • A management qualification, or the willingness to undertake this course
  • Leadership training

Knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience of managing teams/individuals
  • Has demonstrated leadership skills in a supervisory/team leader context
  • Experience of audit

Desirable criteria
  • Previous involvement in quality initiatives.
  • Experience in budgetary management and control, or the willingness to acquire this.

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the NMC or HCPC Code of Professional Conduct
  • Understanding of safeguarding adults and children
  • Accountability in relation to Theatre Coordinator’s role
  • Financial skills and interpretation of budgets

Desirable criteria
  • Able to analyse and interpret a variety of forms of information in an effective manner and plan appropriate action
