Head of Estates Capital Projects

London

London Permanent Band 9 from GBP121,528 including HCAS Inner London

Shape the future of Imperial's estate through the capital investment behind it

Lead Estates Capital Projects across Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, taking responsibility for the strategy, planning and delivery of a complex Trust–wide capital programme.

This is a senior leadership role with the scope to influence both the estate Imperial has today and how it develops for the future.

Reporting directly to the Director of Estates and Facilities, you'll lead the Capital Projects team, oversee projects ranging from GBP5k to more than GBP20m and manage annual capital budgets over GBP20m. You'll work across the Trust to make sure investment is directed effectively and projects deliver the safe, compliant clinical environments patients and staff need.

The impact you'll have

Take the lead on a capital programme that touches every part of a large and complex healthcare estate.

You'll influence which projects move forward, how capital is allocated and how schemes are planned, procured and delivered. Working with clinical leaders, senior managers and colleagues across Estates and Facilities, you'll help turn service requirements into investment plans and ultimately into environments that support better care.

Alongside delivery, you'll have a wider strategic remit, leading Trust–wide estate planning, contributing to the Estates Strategy and overseeing the development of Outline and Full Business Cases.

Lead capital investment from strategy through to delivery

Take responsibility for the Trust's Estates Capital Projects function, including:

  • Leading the development and delivery of the Trust's capital programme across its sites.
  • Managing capital planning, budgeting, forecasting and financial reporting, including externally funded projects.
  • Overseeing projects from feasibility and business case development through to delivery, handover and post–project evaluation.
  • Ensuring projects are delivered safely, compliantly, on time, within budget and to the required quality standards.
  • Leading strategic estate planning and supporting master planning across the Trust.
  • Overseeing the development of Outline and Full Business Cases and presenting proposals through Trust governance.
  • Managing procurement, contractors, professional advisers and other external specialists.
  • Providing expert construction and capital projects advice to senior leaders, committees and project teams.
  • Ensuring projects meet relevant IPC, HTM, HBN, building and health and safety requirements.
  • Identifying programme risks, trends and issues and recommending changes.
  • Supporting the allocation of capital funding and ensuring investment is backed by clear business justification.

The role also acts as delegated budget holder for Estates Capital Project works and carries responsibility for managing capital budgets over GBP20m annually.

Lead the people behind the programme

You'll have full line management responsibility for the Estates Capital Projects team across the Trust, setting direction and making sure the right skills and resources are in place to meet the demands of the programme.

This is a visible senior leadership position within Estates and Facilities. You'll work closely with Trust Executive Directors and other senior stakeholders, present to the Board and management committees and deputise for the Director of Estates and Facilities when required.

What you'll bring

You'll be an established senior estates or capital projects professional who understands what it takes to deliver major investment programmes in a complex environment.

You'll need:

  • A qualification in a relevant technical field and membership of a recognised professional organisation.
  • Chartered status as an Engineer (CEng), Surveyor (RICS), Chartered Builder (CIOB) or Architect (RIBA).
  • A postgraduate qualification to at least master's level, or equivalent senior–level experience in construction programme or project management.
  • A financial qualification and/or experience managing substantial, complex budgets.
  • Experience managing and developing large–scale estates projects and planning in a specialised, demanding environment.
  • Experience and knowledge of NHS procedures, systems, legislation and guidance.
  • Experience delivering complex project programmes and managing capital programmes.
  • Experience leading a Programme Management Office.
  • Strong commercial, financial and analytical skills, with experience managing professional technical teams and external consultants.

A postgraduate management qualification such as an MBA, advanced Excel skills and PRINCE2 or equivalent are listed as desirable rather than essential.

Apply today for the Head of Estates Capital Projects today.

Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust is making seven key appointments across its Estates and Facilities team, bringing together leadership and specialist expertise in capital, programme delivery, clinical engineering and fire safety.
