HSBC Global Services Limited
London

Senior Legal Counsel, Financial Services Regulatory Legal, Corporate and Institutional Banking - GCB4 – London

Some careers open more doors than others!

If you’re looking for a career that will unlock new opportunities, join HSBC and experience the possibilities. Whether you want a role that could take you to the top, or simply take you in an exciting new direction, HSBC offers opportunities, support and rewards that will take you further.

As an HSBC employee in the UK, you will have access to tailored professional development opportunities and a competitive pay and benefits package. This includes private healthcare for all UK-based employees, enhanced maternity and adoption pay and support when you return to work, and a contributory pension scheme with a generous employer contribution.

HSBC’s Legal function plays a critical role in supporting the bank’s global operations, managing legal risk, and ensuring the efficient and effective use of external legal resources. We work closely with leading law firms and alternative legal service providers to secure the best commercial and strategic outcomes for the bank

We are currently seeking an experienced individual to join the Financial Services Regulatory Legal team in Corporate and Institutional Banking ( CIB ). As Senior Legal Counsel, and working alongside an experienced colleague as well as with lawyers directly supporting businesses, you will provide expert and professional legal advice, guidance, and support to ensure that the legal and reputational risks faced by CIB are identified, reported, and mitigated. This role will report to the head of Competition Law and Financial Services Regulatory Legal, CIB.

In this role, you will:

  • Partner with component businesses of CIB to develop strategies to navigate a complex cross-border regulatory environment
  • Support projects to deliver complex new financial services regulations originating from the United Kingdom ( UK ) or European Union ( EU ) or with a material impact on CIB’s UK or EU business operations
  • Contribute to strategic business change, by proactively identifying regulatory challenges (and helping to minimize them)
  • Contribute to a joined-up whole-bank approach to financial regulatory change by working collaboratively with lawyers in adjacent teams and areas
  • Reduce regulatory risk by optimizing relationships with regulators, developing strategies for advocacy, and stewarding examinations
  • Contribute to key advocacy, e.g., where the cross-border application of new financial services regulations would disparately impact HSBC’s structure

To be successful in this role you should meet the following requirements:

  • UK qualified lawyer with relevant experience at a comparable institution or law firm, with a strong of understanding UK and EU regulatory changes and their implementation (ideally including on sustainability- and banking-related developments)
  • Knowledge of the UK and EU regulatory licensing perimeter and key existing UK and EU regulations impacting wholesale financial markets (e.g., FSMA, MiFID/MiFIR, MAR, EMIR, CRD, AIFMD/UCITS, etc.)
  • Ability to work collaboratively with individuals at different levels of seniority, with the ability to build relationships by communicating, influencing and negotiating effectively with stakeholder/customers
  • Practical and pragmatic, with the ability to appropriately balance legal risks with commercial considerations.
  • A self-starter who is able to work independently, prioritise effectively, and support complex matters with limited supervision

The base location for this role is London with a hybrid working pattern.
