We are seeking an experienced and passionate midwife to join our established Education Team as the Midwifery Practice Facilitator for Preceptorship. In this cross-site role, you will lead our Midwifery Preceptorship Programme, working closely with the Lead Midwife for Education and Workforce to develop the programme and support our journey towards achieving the National Preceptorship Quality Mark. This role is ideal for someone with a keen interest in education, professional development, and maintaining high standards of clinical care. You will play a key part in guiding, supporting, and empowering newly qualified midwives as they transition into confident, autonomous practitioners.
Main duties of the job
The purpose of this role is to promote a clinical practice environment which values the education and development of student midwives and supports and facilitates their successful attainment of NMC registration.
Key to the success of this role will be the maintenance of relationships with academic colleagues at King’s College London and the University of Greenwich. The post holder will co-ordinate and facilitate pre-registration placements and educational activities for student
midwives across the maternity services. They will manage the Student Practice Facilitator ensuring smooth implementation of SSSA standards.
In addition the post holder will support newly qualified midwives through a preceptorship programme which aims to ensure they have every opportunity to gain confidence in clinical practice as a registered midwife. The post holder will also support Return to Practice (RtP) midwives, facilitating their individual learning needs for the completion of their RtP
programmes of education.
The post holder will be part of the senior midwifery team and have an integral role to play in the programme of work required to achieve standards within the maternity services by ensuring student midwives and newly qualified midwives practice within the framework and
systems of care that provide safe and effective evidence based care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Education and Training
To maintain effective relationships with academic colleagues based at King’s College London, University of Greenwich, and other Higher Education Institutes (HEI’s) as appropriate.
To work collaboratively with HEI’s in relation to the pre-registration curriculum.
To develop and maintain an effective educational environment which fosters and cultivates a welcoming and student-friendly environment in all areas of practice.
To actively facilitate student midwives and newly qualified midwives learning both in clinical practice and the classroom environment, and where necessary and appropriate supporting midwifery practice
supervisors/assessors or preceptors to meet and achieve the learners objectives.
Provide support to students, practice supervisors/assessors, newly qualified midwives and preceptors in the event the student or
newly qualified midwife fails to meet learning objectives
Work clinically in a supervisory or facilitative role with student midwives and newly qualified midwives in response to their identified learning needs.
To work with ward managers and community team leaders to ensure there is an appropriate level of support available for student midwives and newly qualified midwives and that assessment processes are applied equitably and consistently by clinical staff.
Liaise with ward managers, community team leaders, practice supervisors/assessors and link lecturers to facilitate training needs
analysis and action planning for midwifery students on clinical placement across King’s College Hospital maternity services.
To support the training and development of practice
supervisors/assessors, ensuring there are sufficient numbers to meet the needs of student placements.
Work collaboratively with the midwifery senior management team and HEIs towards increasing placement capacity in line with the midwifery placement expansion project
To support practice supervisors/assessors in their role by
facilitating their continuous professional development in relation to supervisor/assessor updates and accessing additional learning opportunities where required and appropriate.
Maintain live preceptor/practice supervisor/assessor register and database for local and external reporting.
To contribute to the education quality monitoring processes including the NMC review and practice placement audits.
Work collaboratively with the HEI to ensure practice based learning opportunities compliment theoretical teaching to optimise student learning.
To participate on occasion, in teaching clinical skills in the HEI environment and support HEI tutors with examination of students by being involved in OSCE’s.
Oversee the medicines management assessment programme for midwifery
To support newly qualified midwives with medicines management and EPMA
To work closely with midwifery managers to ensure all new midwifery staff have appropriate induction and orientation programmes
Design and deliver a comprehensive preceptorship programme for newly qualified midwives
Facilitate and review progress of preceptees achieving set competencies
Maintain accurate records and databases of training, evaluating and presenting statistics and report findings at least annually.
Be an active member of the Practice Development Nurses/Midwives Forum (PDF) Clinical Responsibilities
To be strongly visible in the clinical area and act as a resource for both staff and clients.
Be an effective role model
Be visibly active in own continuing professional and practice development (CPPD)
Be aware of current evidence-based practice in own midwifery practice and help incorporate this and relevant research in the delivery of excellence in midwifery care.
Communication and Representation
To work collaboratively with HEI’s.
Be a proactive member of the senior midwifery team.
To work closely with the Governance team.
To develop positive working relationships with the other departments, eg Trust PDN teams, nursing pre-reg and preceptorship teams, or outside agencies involved with maternity services
Strategy and Planning
Work towards embedding the culture of continuous quality improvement across the maternity service, ensuring that quality and governance has ownership across all staff groups
Identify training needs for student midwives and newly qualified midwives
Work in conjunction with the team to deliver effective programmes of education and training, taking an active role in teaching on these programmes and any other educational initiatives as appropriate
In collaboration with HEI’s ensure that student attrition rates are minimised which will require early recognition of signs that students are struggling in clinical practice. The post holder should be reflexive to the needs of students and intervene with appropriate support to avoid where possible a student leaving the midwifery programme prior to completion.
To participate in student and newly qualified recruitment and selection processes.

Undergo an annual performance assessment (appraisal) in line with Trust policy
To agree an annual action plan and objectives for service provision and delivery, and for self-development
Actively participate in the production of a personal development plan (PDP)
Be able to travel across to different hospital sites and various community settings where required within the maternity services.
Proficient in the use of information technology and keyboard skills, able to produce high quality reports.
Support the delivery and development of safe and effective systems for patient care for the maternity service.
To be highly knowledgeable, competent and visible teacher and practitioner.
Promote evidence based practice to ensure midwifery practice and educational standards are in line with all statutory and professional guidelines and guidance.
To promote and ensure safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults.
Policy and Service Development Implementation
Contribute to the development of a robust clinical governance and risk management framework and strategy that fosters a culture of ownership, inclusion and accountability, whilst encouraging innovations and problem solving.
Identify and implement key projects and effective systems to monitor compliance within clinical governance requirements.
To participate in reviewing policies, updating and disseminating them as required.
People Management and Performance
Lead, coach and manage the performance of the Student Practice Facilitator in line with good people management practices. Ensuring excellence is recognised and underperformance is addressed.
Participate in regular performance appraisal meetings and ensure the Student Practice Facilitator has a clear set of objectives and development plans.
Ensure the Student Practice Facilitator is compliant with all statutory, mandatory training together with any professional training requirements, ensuring they are up to date and fully compliant.
Manage team absences including sickness in line with Trust policy ensuring the appropriate return to work meetings occur, e-roster is updated and productivity is at keep to the highest possible level.
Identify and fill any vacancies that arise within the team in line with the Trust’s recruitment policy and process.
Identify talent and support the internal talent management process in order attract and retain and succession plan for your people.
Review skills mix at regular intervals in order to identify any potential opportunities to maximise resource utilisation / allocation, ensuring job descriptions are kept up to date.
Ensure overall wellbeing of the team is maintained. Continuously support in improving the morale of the team and implementing a culture of zero-tolerance for bullying and harassment.
