Ready to shape employment risk advice across CIB in Europe?
Why HSBC
HSBC is one of the largest banking and financial services organisations in the world. Guided by our purpose of opening up a world of opportunity, our ambition is to become the world’s most trusted bank globally, putting customers at the heart of everything we do.
The Role
This is a senior in-house employment lawyer role supporting HSBC’s Corporate and Institutional Banking (CIB) business across Europe. Reporting to the Global Head of Employment, Benefits and Incentives Legal this role provides expert legal advice to identify, report and mitigate legal and reputational risks. Success means giving clear, pragmatic guidance that helps the business move quickly while staying within risk appetite. This is a hybrid role based in London or Birmingham with an expectation to be in the office three days a week.
Advising CIB Across Europe
This role offers the opportunity to shape how CIB manages employment legal risk across a complex European footprint. You’ll work closely with senior stakeholders across People, Legal, Compliance and Risk and contribute to decisions that matter to teams and customers every day. If you’re ready to take on a senior employment counsel role with broad exposure and real business impact we’d like to hear from you.
What you'll be doing

- Oversee a varied caseload spanning advisory, contentious and regulatory employment work
- Partner with People, Legal, Compliance and Risk colleagues across global teams to support CIB priorities
- Navigate works councils and local regulatory frameworks to support cross-border business activity
- Apply technical employment law knowledge to the business context and deliver pragmatic solutions
- Take an enterprise-wide view of legal risk and align advice to broader HSBC objectives
- Develop junior team members’ skills and capabilities and support an inclusive high-performance culture
What we're looking for
- Bring qualification as a lawyer with substantial post-qualification employment law experience
- Demonstrate experience advising within financial services, including wholesale investment banking environments
- Apply international experience – for example, including working with works councils and regulatory frameworks
- Deliver employment legal advice that balances technical rigour with practical commercial outcomes
- Manage contentious and regulatory matters with sound judgement and clear risk assessment
- Partner effectively with internal stakeholders to shape advice under time pressure and competing priorities
- Communicate clearly in writing and verbally with senior stakeholders across functions and geographies
- Support the development of colleagues and contribute to inclusive team culture; includes flexing across the teams’ remit to lead and support, as required
