CORE PURPOSE

We require a technically skilled, safety-conscious Science Technician to support our practical science curriculum across Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5. The role involves managing laboratory preparation spaces, maintaining specialist apparatus, and ensuring a safe, fully compliant environment for hands-on scientific experimentation and inquiry.

KEY TASKS & DAILY OPERATIONS

  • Laboratory Preparation: Prepare, calibrate, and set up specialist equipment, chemical solutions, and biological materials required for Biology, Chemistry, and Physics practical lessons and exams.

  • Health & Safety Compliance: Enforce strict COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) regulations, manage chemical storage safely, maintain up-to-date risk assessments, and oversee the safe disposal of hazardous waste.

  • In-Class Technical Support: Provide direct technical assistance to teaching staff and students during practical laboratory sessions, ensuring equipment is operated correctly and safely.

  • Equipment Maintenance & Calibration: Perform routine maintenance, safety checks, and calibrations on laboratory hardware, including microscopes, data loggers, and fume cupboards, arranging for external repairs when required.

  • Stock Control & Procurement: Monitor inventory levels of chemicals, glassware, and consumables, placing timely orders with suppliers to ensure the department remains fully resourced within budget frameworks.

ENVIRONMENT & STRUCTURE

  • Studio School Framework: Operating as an innovative Studio School, our institution specializes in bridging academic learning with real-world project work and industrial pathways, fostering a mature, professional environment for students aged 14–19.

  • Behaviour Systems: The campus implements highly consistent, school-wide behaviour routines that maintain a quiet, respectful, and orderly atmosphere, ensuring laboratory spaces remain strictly controlled, calm, and safe for complex practical work.

PROFILE REQUIREMENTS

  • Qualifications: A degree, higher national diploma (HND), or strong technical qualification in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or a related laboratory science discipline.

  • Technical Expertise: Practical experience working in a school laboratory or commercial science setting, with a solid understanding of school safety frameworks and CLEAPSS guidelines highly advantageous.

  • Organizational Skills: Exceptional attention to detail, strong time-management capabilities to meet tight lesson schedules, and a proactive approach to workspace organization.
