Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist - Adult and Paediatric Cornea and Cataract

We are seeking an appropriately fellowship-trained ophthalmologist to take up this prestigious joint appointment between Great Ormond Street Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital. The successful candidate will provide specialist paediatric cataract and paediatric corneal care at GOSH, alongside adult and paediatric corneal practice at Moorfields. This is a rare opportunity to work across two internationally renowned institutions, caring for children and adults with complex anterior segment disease and joining established, highly specialised multidisciplinary teams. We are looking for an enthusiastic corneal surgeon with the training, experience and ambition to contribute to, and further develop, these nationally and internationally recognised services.

Main duties of the job

• Provide consultant-led assessment and management of children and young people with congenital and acquired corneal, anterior-segment and cataract disorders at GOSH.
• Undertake paediatric cataract and appropriate corneal/anterior-segment surgery, including peri-operative planning, consent, postoperative care and management of complications within agreed competence and governance arrangements.
• Provide adult and paediatric corneal clinics and surgery at Moorfields, including the management of keratoconus, corneal transplantation and complex anterior-segment disease.
• Work with anaesthetic, orthoptic, optometric, nursing, genetics and other multidisciplinary colleagues, including participation in relevant MDT meetings and transition planning.
• Participate in the Moorfields corneal on-call rota.
• Provide timely clinical administration, including results review, correspondence, coding, genetic-test follow-up, MDT preparation and safe handover across both Trusts.
• Maintain accurate records and comply with the safeguarding, consent, information-governance, incident-reporting and infection-prevention requirements of each Trust.
• Contribute to service development, quality improvement, audit and clinical governance for the joint GOSH-Moorfields cornea and cataract pathway, including agreed outcome measures and waiting-list stewardship.

Person Specification
Education and qualifications
Essential

• FRCOphth, MRCOphth or an equivalent ophthalmic qualification.
• Full GMC registration with a licence to practise.
• CCT in Ophthalmology, equivalent ophthalmic training, or within six months of the expected CCT date at interview.
• Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Ophthalmology, eligibility for entry, or expected entry within six months of interview.

Desirable

• Higher degree, such as an MD or PhD, or an equivalent research portfolio.

Knowledge and specialist training
Essential

• Completed higher specialist training in Ophthalmology, or equivalent training and experience.
• Subspecialty fellowship training, or equivalent experience, in cornea and anterior-segment surgery, together with appropriate paediatric ophthalmology and paediatric cataract experience.
• Extensive and current knowledge of adult and paediatric corneal disease, cataract, keratoconus, corneal transplantation and complex anterior-segment conditions.
• Understanding of research methods, evidence-based practice, clinical audit and quality-improvement methodology.
• Awareness of current issues affecting the NHS and UK higher education, and their implications for GOSH, Moorfields and their university partners.

Desirable

• Formal clinical-leadership training.
• Training in clinical and/or educational supervision consistent with GMC requirements.

Clinical, teaching and research experience
Essential

• Evidence of independent competence appropriate to consultant practice in corneal transplantation and paediatric cataract surgery, including peri-operative care and management of complications.
• Experience of postgraduate teaching and the supervision of trainees and other clinical staff.
• Evidence of clinical governance, audit or quality improvement and safe multidisciplinary working.
• Current safeguarding-children competence appropriate to consultant practice and understanding of consent and assent in paediatric care.

Desirable

• Peer-reviewed publications or presentations relevant to cornea, cataract, anterior-segment disease or paediatric ophthalmology.
• Experience of contributing to or leading clinical research, including applications for research funding and collaboration with academic or funding partners.
• Experience in a clinical or biomedical academic environment and awareness of relevant NIHR funding streams.
• Clinical leadership or management experience in developing services, transition pathways, QI programmes or cross-organisational working.

Skills and capabilities
Essential

• A high degree of clinical and surgical skill in cornea and anterior-segment surgery and paediatric cataract surgery, within agreed competence and governance arrangements.
• Ability to lead and coordinate multidisciplinary clinical teams and deliver safe care across GOSH and Moorfields.
• Ability to communicate effectively with children, young people, adults, families and professional colleagues.

Desirable

• Ability to build effective relationships with collaborators, university and hospital groups, sponsors or funding bodies.
