Job overview

The job holder will be responsible for the provision of Occupational Therapy services within the field of neurology and will develop links with other departments to facilitate a multidisciplinary team approach. The jobholder will instruct and supervise students and junior and support staff. The post requires a flexible approach to working and requires the post holder to undertake weekend commitments as required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To manage a caseload of patients with using evidence based/client centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions.
  • To participate in the planning, development and evaluation of OT services within a designated area/team, holding responsibility for defined projects.
  • To contribute to the maintenance and development of the Trust OT service.
  • To monitor and advise in the allocation of students in the Stroke
  • To regularly supervise OT students on practice placement.
  • To co-ordinate supervision and appraisal of Senior and Junior staff.
  • To work across professional groups to ensure high quality and timely services are provided to patients.

Main duties of the job

  • To work with patients to identify OT goals as part of the overall care plan, using specialist OT assessment tools.
  • To manage a caseload of clients.
  • To keep in up to date with new developments and changing trends in OT.
  • To monitor, evaluate and modify treatment in order to measure progress and ensure effectiveness of intervention.
  • To apply a high level of understanding of the effect of disability and provide training and advice on lifestyles changes and adaptations to the clients social and physical environment.
  • To assess the occupational needs of a defined patient group and establish and evaluate appropriate OT interventions.
  • To establish robust communication networks with patients, carers, agencies MDT members and other agencies.
  • To promote awareness of the role of OT within the team, negotiating priorities where appropriate.
  • To ensure that up to date written and electronic records and activity data are maintained in accordance with Professional and Trust standards and provide specialist OT reports relevant to practice setting.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Main Duties and Responsibilities

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

1. To manage a caseload of complex neurological patients referred to the ANR service using evidence based/client centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions.

2. To receive ANR neurological referrals, undertake full assessment and independently plan individual, specialized, evidence-based, treatment programmes for patients appropriately depending on the occupational therapist’s diagnosis, using appropriate clinical reasoning.

3. To apply a high level of understanding of the effect of illness/disability on occupational performance and provide training and advice on adaptations to technique and the patient’s social and physical environment.

4. To be competent in the development and implementation of remedial and preventative treatment programmes addressing motor, sensory, cognitive, perceptual, psychological needs and occupational performance, using evidence-based principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions.

5. To identify risks, complete risk assessments and implement risk management strategies and document this accurately.

6. To recognise any change in the condition of the patient and alter treatment accordingly or escalate to medical teams as required.

7. To support patients to set goals and plan, organise and implement appropriate treatment programs.

8. To plan and implement individual and/or group interventions, in collaboration with clients and carers, to achieve therapeutic goals.

9. To select evidence-based techniques as part of a coordinated treatment program.

10. To reflect on interventions, evaluate outcomes and modify treatment in order to measure progress and ensure effectiveness of intervention.

11. To make appropriate clinical observations and keep accurate records of assessments and interventions in accordance with local and national guidelines.

12. To advise clients and carers on specific aids, equipment and adaptations and recommend provisions to support recovery from surgical procedures.

13. To liaise with professionals in onward services to ensure continuity of care.

14. To compile clear assessment reports and recommendations for future care, for the multi-disciplinary team and other external agencies.

15. To respect the individuality, values, culture and religious diversity of patients and contribute to the provision of a service sensitive to these needs, ensuring equity of service provision

16. To work as an autonomous practitioner and display appropriate problem solving, analytical and judgement skills.

17. To actively contribute to and coordinate multi-disciplinary working to ensure high quality and timely services are provided to patients.

18. To comply with all relevant local policies and procedures, national standards and guidelines and adhere to the Royal College of Occupational Therapy professional standards and ethics.

COMMUNICATION

1. To establish robust communication networks with patients, carers, multidisciplinary members and other agencies.

2. To promote awareness of the role of occupational therapy within the team, negotiating priorities where appropriate.

3. To ensure that up to date written and electronic records and activity data are maintained in accordance with Professional and Trust standards and provide reports relevant to practice setting.

4. To represent occupational therapy and actively participate in meetings at ward, departmental and service level, including delegation for the clinical lead occupational therapist.

5. To be skilled in communication reasoning and motivating patients to participate in sessions.

6. To communicate complex information to patients and family/ carers who may have barriers to understanding.

7. To be skilled in managing differences of opinions, conflict and difficult conversations.

PEOPLE MANAGEMENT

1. Lead, coach and manage the performance of the team in line with good people management practices. Ensuring excellence is recognised and underperformance is addressed.

2. To coordinate supervision and provide support as appropriate for occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, technicians and students in line with departmental protocol.

3. Participate in regular performance appraisal meetings and ensure each member of the team has a clear set of objectives and development plans.

4. Ensure the team is compliant with all statutory and mandatory training together with any professional training requirements, ensuring they are up to date and fully compliant.

5. Manage team absences including sickness in line with Trust policy ensuring the appropriate return to work meetings occur, e-roster is updated and productivity is at keep to the highest possible level.

6. Identify and fill any vacancies that arise within the team in line with the Trust’s recruitment policy and process.

7. Identify talent and support the internal talent management process in order attract and retain and succession plan for your people.

8. Review skills mix at regular intervals in order to identify any potential opportunities to maximise resource utilisation / allocation, ensuring job descriptions are kept up to date.

9. To oversee, maintain and develop competencies for individual team members regarding aspects of Occupational Therapy.

10. To be aware of the importance of staff wellbeing, accessing trust support as required and raising any concerns. Continuously support in improving the morale of the team and implementing a culture of zero-tolerance for bullying and harassment.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

1. To promote development of occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, technicians and students according to their training and development needs as identified through supervision and appraisal.

2. To participate in and present on the in-service training, preceptorship programmes, multi-disciplinary trainings and external conferences.

3. To monitor and advise in the allocation of students in the ANR occupational therapy team.

4. To regularly supervise occupational therapy students on practice placement.

5. To contribute to the induction and training of students and other staff both within the Trust and where appropriate externally.

6. To review and reflect on own practice and performance through effective use of professional and operational supervision and appraisal.

7. To access internal and external training and education as required to meet competencies or develop specialist skills relevant to objectives.

8. To demonstrate the ability to critically evaluate current research and apply this to practise.

ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES

1. To have good IT skills and be able to use a variety of IT systems to input patient and staff data as required.

2. To be responsible for competent use and maintenance of equipment, raising any concerns and reporting when further resources are needed.

3. To carry out administrative duties as required e.g. assisting in ordering, receiving and maintaining stock and managing petty cash.

  • Knowledge and application of OT standardised assessments.
  • Extensive clinical experience in relevant clinical area outcome measures.
  • Demonstrable ability to analyse and evaluate the application of Occupational Therapy treatment.

  • Significant clinical experience in a range of healthcare settings.
  • Leadership and first line management experience.
  • Masters degree or equivalent.
