Supporting student midwives in clinical learning, and ensuring safe, effective, and reflective practice.
Main duties of the job
To support and develop the pre-registration midwifery students whilst on clinical placements within King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust across all sites, reflecting the NMC standards
Promote high standards of care through role modelling the demonstration of clinical expertise , leadership and professionalism
To demonstrate clinical expertise and act as an effective role model for best practice midwifery for pre-registration midwifery students
To work along-side the Midwifery Practice Facilitator , assisting in the delivery of effective programmes and the facilitation of high quality placement learning
Facilitate a positive learning environment in the classroom, simulation and clinical areas where student development is encouraged and supported and talent is fostered and enhanced
To support both students and practice supervisors and assessors within the clinical environment
To provide pastoral support, guidance and training to all stakeholders on all aspects of pre-registration midwifery
To provide support to students who have been identified as requiring further development in order to achieve the required standard for their stage of training.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1. Clinical Practice
To work in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct, and Trust Policies and Procedures.
Be a highly visible clinical role model, working al ongside pre-registration midwifery students and practice supervisors and assessors
To ensure that own practice demonstrates current clinical knowledge
To work clinically alongside pre-registration midwifery students where required across the organisation , supporting individual students to develop their practice
To provide feedback to the midwifery students and practice supervisors and assessors , verbally and through the Pan London Midwifery Practice Assessment Documents
To demonstrate a strong understanding of the support a student midwife requires during their training
Contribute to an environment in which effective practice-based learning is fostered, implemented, evaluated and shared
Support practice supervisors and assessors in their roles
To work effectively as part of the multi-professional, inter-disciplinary team, encouraging and supporting other health care professionals in the promotion and maintenance of an effective learning environment
To demonstrate effective communication and customer care skills with patients and their relatives/carers, thereby acting as a positive role m odel for midwives and other staff
To maintain effective working relations with colleagues at all levels and from all professions within the trust, ensuring effective communication at all times
To maintain records of training undertaken by each member of staff
2. Education and Research
To facilitate the learning and continuing development of pre-registration midwifery students in the trust, ensuring that education is responsive to trust developments and national guidance around pre-registration midwifery
To help develop and co-ordinate planned educational programmes and opportunities for pre-registration midwifery students
Support the implementation of the new NMC proficiencies and t he Standards for student supervision and assessment
To assist in maintaining a high quality learning placement experience for student midwives within the trust.
To support pre -registration midwifery students to reflect on their clinical practice through clinical supervision
To support with the identification of suitable practice assessors and supervisors who are clear on their role and have received adequate support and preparation
To assist in the allocation of suitable practice assessors and supervisors
To support the delivery of practice assessor and supervisor training programmes
To help create, sustain and support an environment where student midwives can flourish
To support practice assessor and supervisors to ensure that learning opportu nities are effectively utilised
To support research awareness by, disseminating appropriate evidence-based and research findings relevant to the clinical practice area
To work closely with the Midwifery Practice Facilitators to ensure the T rust meets the NMC requirements
To work collaboratively with practice development midwives, ward managers/team leaders and midwifery staff to champion p re-registration midwifery within the organisation
To be involved in the working partnership with the Capital M idwife training steering group and colleagues across KHP
To be part of the PROMPT faculty and contribute to other multidisciplinary training
3. Management
To manage own time to ensure balance between clinical teaching and administrative activities
To produce appropriate student data or reports requested by management
To help support and maintain the Trust’s SSSA database
To assist in the process of recruitment of pre-registration midwifery students for the partner universities
To support all midwifery students to receive a comprehensive and individualised induction and orientation package on commencement of post
To actively participate in evaluation of all student placements
Work collaborative with our partner universities
To ensure compliance with the Trust's Equality and Diversity Policy, supporting the delivery of the Trusts Race Equality Scheme and the Trust's duty to positively promote race equality and equality of opportunity for disabled people ensuring services are responsive to the needs of equality groups
To be an active member of the Trust’s Practice Development Nurses
Forum and other forums for developing practice
In conjunction with senior midwifery colleagues provide direction for the Trust in regard to pre-registration midwifery
4. Personal Professional Development
To actively participate in maintaining own professional development, identifying own educational and clinical training needs with Line Manager
Participate in own a ppraisal
To ensure own mandatory training certificates are current.
To maintain your own personal and professional development in accordance with PREP requirements, attending mandatory study sessions as required
To participate in reflective practice, and maintain a personal learning portfolio.
To keep up to date with NMC, relevant specialist, Faculty & Trust guidelines and protocols.
To maintain full conversance with current national and local guidance and the NMC curriculum standards

- Completed midwifery preceptorship programme
- Practice Supervisor & Practice Assessor competency or equivalent
Experience

- Experience as a Mentor/Practice Supervisor and Assessor

- Excellent clinical skills and competence in suturing and cannulation
