The position is for a FCPA research assistant to investigate Sagnac interferometry for fibre amplification.

The FCPA project is for 6 months to be held in the attosecond quantum physics laboratory at King's College London, in the NMES faculty at the Strand Campus (under the supervision of Dr Amelle Zair).

We are looking for hiring an excellent research assistant with a master's degree in Photonics. Candidates should have expertise in fibre amplifier, either through a master project, and internship or a secondment. This experience should include setting up, testing, characterising a fibre femtosecond amplifier. Any additional experience in research link to the measurement of femtosecond pulses will be complementary.

About the role

The FCPA research assistant primary role will consist of investigating Sagnac interferometry for fibre amplification of a high repetition rate femtosecond Ytterbium CPA system at King's College London in the Attosecond quantum physics laboratory led by Dr Amelle Zair.

The FCPA researcher assistant will be responsible for the following activities:

Research: Undertaking research on FCPA amplifier by preparing and setting up the amplification architecture. Conducting measurements of the stability of the amplifier, beam quality, the gain and the power law. Conducting literature review and experiments and document all data and results obtained.

Expertise: He/She/They need to have expertise in fibre amplifier set up in depth and be capable of learning implementing this in a whole CPA chain.

Teaching and learning: Assisting in the supervision of master students and support the other member of the laboratory. He/She/they will be expected to show consideration as part of pastoral care duty.

Communication: Write research material on FCPA (reports, publications, documentations). Present research progress to supervisor and collaborations and meetings.

Liaison and networking and support managing : Liaise with the group members and support them in research activities.

Teamwork: Participate to all diagnostic developments (CEP stability, femto-measurement via FROG, SPIDER, POLLYWOG etc...) and attend and contribute to all relevant meetings (experimental meetings, group meetings, one-to-one, collaborative meetings and journal club).

Initiative, problem solving and decision making : He/She/They are expected make use of standard technique concerning amplifier build up (optical alignment procedure and NA fitting etc...), measurement of all characteristic and data management (analysis, coding, organization, storage etc...) needed for the FCPA project and find solution on optical implementation. Contribute to the delivery of the lines (amplified line, multi colour line etc...) for the research applications with the team. Generate original idea on the design of FCPA and its implementation based on outcomes.

Planning and managing resources: He/She/They will be in charge of support planning and allocating bam time to the experiments on a weekly basis, coordinate the FCPA work.

Work environment: Be the main point of contact for safety documentation and participating as a representative of the group to the monthly H&S meeting.

This is a full-time post (35 Hours per week) with a probation of 6 months, offered on a fixed term contract for 6 months. The position is an onsite position. It cannot be undertaken remotely.

Research staff at King's are entitled to at least 10 days per year (pro-rata) for professional development. This entitlement, from the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers , applies to Postdocs, Research Assistants, Research and Teaching Technicians, Teaching Fellows and AEP equivalent up to and including grade 7. About you

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

1. A master in photonics that includes a clear femtosecond fibre laser expertise (master project) 2. A strong expertise in femtosecond pulse measurements

3. An expertise in technical drawing of system.

4. An expertise in optical paths set up and design for research.

5. Excellent communication skills and reporting

6. High level of commitment and working in a team

Desirable criteria

1. Coding ability (labview, Maltab, Python or similar)

2. Ability to produce, archive, organize and test data and documentations

3. Ability to assist in mentoring or sub supervision

4. Being EDI aware and bystander
