1:1 Learning Support Assistant – Year 1 (ASD with Complex Needs)

Location: Walthamstow, London E17
Salary: £95.83 per day
Start Date: ASAP (Subject to DBS and clearance)

Assignment Details

• Full-time role, Monday to Friday (Term Time Only)
• Working hours: 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM
• Long-term role for the full academic year
• Working 1:1 with a Year 1 pupil with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and complex needs

About the Role

Connex Education is working on behalf of a large and inclusive mainstream primary school in Waltham Forest to recruit a Learning Support Assistant (LSA). This is a full-time role, supporting a Year 1 pupil with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and complex needs.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone experienced in supporting children with additional needs in a mainstream setting. The successful candidate will play a vital role in helping the pupil to access learning, manage transitions, and build essential communication and social skills. The school provides a nurturing, structured, and aspirational environment where all pupils are encouraged to achieve their potential.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide consistent 1:1 support for a Year 1 pupil with ASD and complex needs
• Adapt activities and use visual supports, structured routines, and personalised strategies to aid engagement in learning
• Support communication development, including the use of visual timetables, PECS, or Makaton (where appropriate)
• Encourage social interaction and emotional regulation through positive reinforcement and a calm, patient approach
• Work closely with the class teacher and SENCO to implement EHCP targets and personalised support plans
• Record and monitor progress through observations and contribute to regular reviews
• Promote inclusion by supporting the pupil to participate fully in school life and classroom activities

Person Specification

• Experience supporting children with ASD and complex needs in schools, care, or similar settings
• Knowledge of autism strategies to support communication, learning, and behaviour
• A calm, resilient, and empathetic approach to working with children with additional needs
• Ability to build positive, trusting relationships with pupils, staff, and families

Must have a current DBS on the update service or willingness to apply for one through Connex
