School Caretaker
To ensure the school premises and grounds are maintained to a high standard, providing a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for pupils, staff, and visitors. Key Responsibilities Site Security & Safety * Open and secure the school buildings and grounds at designated times. * Ensure the security of the premises, including locking doors, setting alarms, and monitoring access. * Carry out regular health and safety checks and report any hazards or maintenance needs. Maintenance & Repairs * Undertake minor repairs and maintenance (e.g., fixing doors, changing light bulbs, unblocking drains). * Arrange and oversee external contractors when specialist repairs are required. * Monitor heating, lighting, and water systems to ensure they are functioning correctly. Cleaning & Hygiene * Support the cleaning team as required to maintain high standards of cleanliness. * Ensure toilets, classrooms, and communal areas are kept clean and stocked. * Carry out emergency cleaning (e.g., spillages, accidents). Groundskeeping * Maintain outdoor areas including playgrounds, car parks, and pathways, ensuring they are safe and tidy. * Clear leaves, litter, snow, and ice to keep paths safe. * Assist with general gardening duties when required. General Duties * Move furniture, set up rooms for lessons, exams, and events. * Accept and distribute deliveries. * Support fire drills and emergency procedures. * Promote safe working practices at all times. Person Specification Essential Skills & Experience * Practical skills in DIY, maintenance, and repairs. * Awareness of health and safety regulations. * Ability to work independently and take initiative. * Reliability, flexibility, and a strong work ethic. * Good communication skills for dealing with staff, pupils, and contractors. Desirable Skills * Previous experience in a caretaker or site management role. * Knowledge of safeguarding practices. * Basic IT skills. Working Hours & Conditions * 7am - 4pm * May include occasional evenings or weekends to support school events. * Role involves physical activity and working both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions
