The story of her relationship with music begins with the Kirar she bought with a quarter as a child. Asnakech imagined herself playing Kirar and singing along with it. As an Azmari, she began performing at a young age in Addis Ababa's small taverns and nightclubs.
She was also a well-known Ethiopian entertainer, having made her debut in 1952 at the City Hall Theater. Asnakech, who was remarkable for her age, particularly in the 1950s, dazzled the stage with her emotional performances in auditoriums, which made a sensation in the conventional culture of the time. Prior to resigning from the National Theater, Asnakech worked there for a long time.
